Responding to COVID-19's devastating impacts on the nonprofit arts and cultural sector in the Central Puget Sound Region, ArtsFund announces grants to arts and cultural nonprofits totaling $4,831,100. This total includes both an early distribution of ArtsFund's keystone annual operating support grants as well as emergency support payments from ArtsFund's COVID-19 Arts Emergency Relief Fund. All grants are unrestricted. Today's announcement brings ArtsFund's total grant making since its launch in 1969 to nearly $89 million.

René Buch, the co-founder and artistic director of Off-Broadway's Repertorio Español, has passed away at 94. The artistic leader, playwright, and director died April 19th at his home in New York.

Season. Sossi previously directed the West Coast premiere exactly 50 years ago, in the spring of 1970, as the second production ever at the then brand-new Odyssey Theatre. The Serpent opens on March 7 at the Odyssey's current home in West L.A., where performances will continue through May 3.

Casting details have been announced for the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC) 2020 Summer production of The Winter's Tale, which plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 28 March 2020. Directed by RSC Deputy Artistic Director, Erica Whyman, the production will be cross-cast with The Comedy of Errors (from 25 April 2020) and Pericles (from 15 August 2020). Additional special award honorees will be announced soon.

I admit this is an absolutely personal, totally one-sided view of what gave one man opera thrills last year and what I will look back on with delight. Some are old works, some are new, some are individual performers, some are ensembles, some are complete productions, some are merely the highlight of an evening, most are domestic, a few are foreign. In any case, as the new decade begins, I recall that these are the vocal highlights that made my heart beat a little faster and made me look forward to the year ahead.
