New Exhibition Featuring Wearable Art Opens in Gallery 110 North of the Plymouth Arts Center

The public is invited to attend the opening reception for Plymouth Arts Center's new exhibition, a?oeWear 'Fore' Arta?? on Friday, March 20, 2020 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. a?oeWear 'Fore' Arta?? is a collection of artistic wearable items designed with inspiration from nature, constructed of natural materials, created by 12 Wisconsin artists. Bring your friends to view, enjoy, and purchase one-of-a-kind wearable art including garments, jackets, scarves, bags and jewelry. The show will be on display in Gallery 110 North through May 1st.  The exhibition is generously sponsored by Conrad and Barbara Barrows and Franz Backus.

Theatre Memphis Receives National Award and Property as Theatre Hits the Century Mark

The Diamond Crown Organization Award from the American Association of Community Theatre was presented to Theatre Memphis, Monday, March 2, 2020. Mayor Jim Strickland was present to officially announce the honor at the March board meeting of Theatre Memphis. Theatre Memphis staff and civic guests including Memphis City Councilman Ford Canale, Grinder Taber Grinder general contractor representatives Vice President Brett Grinder and Senior Project Manager Ben Cooper, and Renaissance Group President and architect Sal Feraci were in attendance, as well. It was also announced that the 7 acre-plus property on which the theatre sits and has been leasing from the city for 50 years has been deeded to Theatre Memphis by the City Council.

Hey Detroit, are you ready for the naughtiest and funniest magic show in world? The Naked Magicians are coming on March 6th and 7th to The Music Hall in Detroit. Following their smash hit 2019 residency at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, The Naked Magicians are returning to the U.S. for a coast-to-coast tour in 2020 and making a stop here this weekend. The Naked Magicians is comprised of Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne, two of Australia's most famous magicians. It's the perfect show for a date night or the ultimate girl's night out as The Naked Magicians have performed - and undressed - for millions of fans in more than 250 cities and seven countries. The duo will forego top hats and capes for full frontal illusions complete with magic, muscles, and endless laughs or as their website says, 'good magicians don't need sleeves and great magicians don't need pants - when we say 'abracadabra,' the audience isn't always looking at our hands.' A legend of 20th century music and an international icon of India, sitar virtuoso and singular composer Ravi Shankar (1920 - 2012) will be commemorated with a series of Ravi Shankar Centennial Concerts in May 2020 to celebrate 100 years since his birth on April 7, 1920. Ravi Shankar Centennial Concerts feature family members Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar as well as special guest artists Philip Glass, Dhani Harrison (son of George Harrison), Nitin Sawhney, and an orchestra of Shankar's foremost disciples performing on venerable stages across the globe (*please see the concert listings below for which guest artists will appear at each show*).

Moaning Drop Single 'Make It Stop'

Today, LA's Moaning have released 'Make It Stop,' the latest single from their anticipated sophomore album, Uneasy Laughter. Paste Magazine, who premiered the song and profiled the band today, is calling it 'a return to the partly raucous, partly precise guitars of their first album. Lyrically, however, it's a dramatic turn from their dejected self-titled-it almost comes off as an inner monologue between lead singer Sean Solomon's past self and newly improved self.' Uneasy Laughter is available for pre-orderand due March 20th via Sub Pop.

Theatre production company Parity Productions has released its monthly list of Qualifying Productions for March -their directory of New York City shows in which the individual creative teams have 50% of the positions filled with women and/or trans and gender nonconforming (TGNC) artists (directors, designers, and playwrights).

The Guido Cantelli International Conducting Competition Comes Back To Life

After a forty-year absence, and to celebrate one hundred years since the birth of Guido Cantelli - the great conductor from Novara - the Conducting Competition that was created in his memory comes to life again and takes on a strong international connotation while focusing on the younger generations. The competition has its natural home in the Teatro Coccia of Novara in Italy. Registrations for the Competition will open from 1 March to 30 April 2020: conductors of all nationalities, between the age of 18 and 35 will be eligible to participate. Candidates will undergo a preselection based on their CVs and video recordings. From 9 to 12 September the finalists will fulfill the competition's assignments from the podium of the Orchestra del Teatro Regio in Turin and will be examined by a jury made of internationally renowned artists and cultural personalities. The second and last round of the finals will take place in Novara on 13 September. 

The Argyle Theatre Has Announced Cast and Creative Team for CABARET

Long Island's newest year-round professional theatrical venue, The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), will present the hit Broadway musical Cabaret with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. Performances begin Thursday, March 12, 2020 for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2020 at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island). Opening Night is Saturday evening, March 14, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

Michael Tilson Thomas Will Receive Honorary Doctorate From Cleveland Institute Of Music

The Cleveland Institute of Music announced yesterday that acclaimed conductor, composer and educator Michael Tilson Thomas will be awarded an honorary doctorate at the school's 95th Commencement Ceremony in Kulas Hall on Saturday, May 16 at 10am EDT. Attendance is by invitation only, but a live stream will be available via cim.edu. Yesterday's announcement was given at a special MTT-led rehearsal of the CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, which MTT also conducts February 20-23.

Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) of Santa Barbara will celebrate its longstanding relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a Gala 100th Anniversary Concert featuring the acclaimed orchestra at the Granada Theatre on Friday, March 6 a?" 100 years to the day from the LA Phil's first performance in Santa Barbara on March 6, 1920. Conducted by Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, the performance will include Ives' Symphony No. 2 and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, a?oeFrom the New World.a?? The concert will begin at 7 pm.
