The Bridge Project is an unprecedented three-year transatlantic collaboration—uniting BAM, The Old Vic, and Neal Street—showcasing the best talent in New York and London theater. According to director Sam Mendes, "The idea behind The Bridge Project was born out of a simple desire: a wish for artists, collaborators, and audiences on both sides of the Atlantic to experience one another's work, talent, and artistry in the theater." That desire led to a unique partnership that, in its three-year existence, produced five stellar international productions of classic works, playing to nearly half a million people around the world.

For its inaugural presentation in 2009, Mendes staged two sensational productions: Shakespeare'sThe Winter's Tale and Tom Stoppard's adaptation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard
