Without a doubt, Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical CATS is of an era. Based on one of Lloyd Webber's favorite books as a child, T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, it was a perfect vehicle for the tastes of theatre lovers in the eighties, the decade of excess. The large-scale production, which opened on Broadway in 1982, was a highly theatrical concept featuring an elaborate light show, impressive dance numbers, and an intoxicating score, exactly what the public had come to expect from the composer of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and EVITA.

The national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical CATS has kicked off in Providence and, based on Thursday night's performance, this revival is in exceedingly fine form.

Sundance Institute will gather 20 celebrated and revered expert voices across film, art, culture and science to award feature-length and short films shown at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival with 12 prizes, announced at a ceremony February 2 that will be livestreamed at sundance.org and on YouTube. Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 29 and will also be livestreamed. The Festival takes place January 24 through February 3 in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.

Hale Centre Theatre's season-opening production of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, directed by the inimitable Cambrian James ~ is two and a half hours of spirited story-telling, featuring a bravura performance by Austin Delp as the heroic Sir Percy Blakeney. Show runs through October 6th.

The Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance (SARTA) presents the 36th annual Youth Elly Award Ceremony on Sunday, September 9 at 7:00pm (Doors open at 6pm) at the Cosumnes Oaks High School Performing Arts Center located at 8350 Lotz Parkway in Elk Grove. The ceremony will last approximately three hours with a 20-minute intermission.

A layered stage and stellar cast bring dimension to Soulpepper's production of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM. Directed by Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu, this adaptation of August Wilson's 1982 play follows an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago where the music takes a back seat to discussions of race and human rights.
