Review: BARTLEBY / LA VOIX HUMAINE at Opéra Royal De Wallonie Liège
by Alexandre DIACONU - May 22, 2026

BARTLEBY begins with a tease. The curtain only rises a little, just enough to show feet. Expressive. Unexpected and intriguing from the first second. When it finally lifts, Vincent Lemaire’s set reveals itself in clean, minimal lines, white bricks, a black table, black chairs, and a bust. It’s atemporal, and still you feel the lawyer’s office in your bones.

Interview: Atlanta Opera’s Tomer Zvulun on Wagner’s TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, the Finale of His RING Cycle

“Stories are stories are stories, whether it’s Wagner’s Wotan and Fricka (in the Ring), Handel’s Jupiter and Juno (in Handel’s SEMELE) or Broadway’s Tevye and Golde (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) and they repeat in different cultures and traditions,” General Manager and Artistic Director of the Atlanta Opera, Tomer Zvulun, said to me. “And whether it’s talking about siblings or spouses, or parents and children, we always end with similar concerns.” Our conversation was about his company’s new production of Wagner’s TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, better known to Wagner aficionados as GOTTERDAMMERUNG, which opens on May 30 at Atlanta’s Cobb Performing Arts Center.

Review: QUARTET IN AUTUMN, Arcola Theatre
by Clementine Scott - May 20, 2026

Despite her relative unpopularity within her lifetime, Barbara Pym always excelled at plumbing the depths in the lives of desperately ordinary people. A History of Broadway Proshots and Screen Adaptations
by Jennifer Ashley Tepper - May 31, 2026

What is a pro-shot and how is it different than an adapted film? Pro-shot is an abbreviation for professionally shot, denoting a stage play that was captured in its native habitat: a theatre. In general, a pro-shot seeks to film the exact experience that audience members would have at a live performance of the show, in contrast with a feature film which actually adapts the piece into a new form, including different locations, the removal of theatrical aesthetic, and changes to make the script work as a film as opposed to as a live theatrical show.

Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Paramount Theatre
by Shelley Dean - May 18, 2026

It’s almost unbelievable for me to admit that this was my first time seeing The Phantom of the Opera. Of course, I knew the iconic songs and had seen countless clips over the years, but experiencing the production live on stage for the first time was entirely different, haunting, and spine-chilling in the best way possible. From the chandelier drop to the monumental set pieces, the show truly lives up to its legendary reputation. The 2026 tour, directed by Harold Prince, serves as a revitalized version of the original production, featuring Maria Björnson’s iconic designs, musical staging, and choreography by Gillian Lynne. It is absolutely ravishing, and Seattle audiences are lining up hours early to witness the spectacle for themselves.
