Jesus Christ Superstar is an iconic musical phenomenon with a world-wide fan base. Now, almost 10 years after the last major tour, a new mesmerizing production comes to North America.

Helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie, the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.

Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar'.

When JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR first premiered in 1972, it was banned by the BBC for being “sacrilegious.” The musical, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, imagines the last week in the life of Jesus Christ in the form of a sung-through rock opera. The tour currently at DPAC plays into the rock side of the musical.

This iconic musical has always been one of our favorites, and we've have lost count of how many times we've seen it. This touring production exceeded every one of our very high expectations. The 50th anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar updates the much-loved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and modernizes it in a way that makes it more accessible and enjoyable to today's audiences. The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1971, has reached a world-wide audience since then, with performances in Australia, Europe, and the West End. There have been several filmed versions of the production as well, including the 1973 movie starring Ted Neeley, as well as a more modern retelling of the rock opera in 2000 starring Glenn Carter. Finally, on Easter Sunday, NBC aired a live version of the production starring John Legend as Jesus. The longevity of the musical, as well as the various adaptations that have been made, show just how beloved the show has been for decades.
