BWW Review: GREEN DAY'S AMERICAN IDIOT at Town Hall Arts Center
by Jon Bee - Sep 19, 2018

Teen angst is not something to ignore. Often times, it is the only semblance of emotion that youths exhibit in hopes of finding comfort from others and answers from themselves. Just as these emotions are real, so too is the music that exemplifies these feelings. The combination of these ideas leads us to such musical performances as Green Day's American Idiot at Town Hall Arts Center.

BWW Review: THE VIRGIN TRIAL at The Great Canadian Theatre Company
by Courtney Castelino - Sep 16, 2018

I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the premiere of The Great Canadian Theatre Company's production of Kate Hennig's The Virgin Trial, directed by Eric Coates. Although this production is the sequel to Hennig's The Last Wife, the play stands on its own so no prior knowledge is needed. The play is set in modern times, but the characters and events are from the Tudor era. English history buffs will particularly enjoy the story as it is partially based on factual events with some speculation thrown in, which makes for a fascinating crime drama.

The Fourth Annual Harvard-Yale Cantata Comes to Feinstein's/54 Below
by BWW News Desk - Sep 13, 2018

FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, again presents a cast of Harvard and Yale grads in The Fourth Annual Harvard-Yale Cantata. Join us for a unique evening at Feinstein's/54 Below, with Team Harvard looking to avenge another lucky one-point victory by Team Yale, who won in HY III for the second year in a row by a score of 32-31. Last year wasn't a pure win for Yale, as they were buoyed by some great songs and performances from their Princeton teammates. Harvard was bogged down (they say) by being paired with Columbia. No excuses in HY IV, as we're back to a straight up Harvard v. Yale competition.

BWW Interview: Matthew Morrison Will Bring Glee to Bay Area Cabaret; Recalls Weinstein Woes on Broadway
by Wayman Wong - Sep 17, 2018

Matthew Morrison couldn't be more 'Glee'-ful about launching Bay Area Cabaret's 15th Anniversary Season on Sept. 30 at the world-famous Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. 'I love places that have so much history,' says the Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee. Among the celebrated singers who've sung there: Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, Peggy Lee and Tina Turner. And in 1961, Tony Bennett first performed 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' there, which is especially apt since the Fairmont sits high upon Nob Hill, 'where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars.'

Soho Rep Announces 2018-19 Season
by A.A. Cristi - Sep 11, 2018

Soho Rep. announces its 2018-2019 season, with two world premieres that demonstrate the small but flexible space's 'indispensible' (New York Magazine) presence as 'a 70-seat house filled with big ideas' (Hilton Als, The New Yorker). Through singular and irreverent stylistic approaches, Kate Tarker's Thunderbodies, directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz (October 16-November 18, 2018), and Christopher Chen's Passage, directed by Saheem Ali (April 23-May 26, 2019),interrogate the staggering ramifications of U.S and global imperialism.

BWW Review: Human Race Theatre Company bats a 1000 with World Premiere of BANNED FROM BASEBALL
by Jenni Cypher - Sep 11, 2018

BANNED FROM BASEBALL, the first play written by Patricia O'Hara, is making its world premiere at the Human Race.  Seems fitting to be so close to the original action. O'Hara is not only a writer but also a Professor of English Literature at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where she teaches a course titled, not surprisingly, Baseball in American Literature and Culture.  I really liked how she was able to tell this story and keep the audience interested, even though, at least the majority of us, knew how the story ended. The play was nuanced in a way that helped you see into the minds and hearts of the major players, Pete Rose and Bart Giamatti, the Baseball Commissioner.  Excellent casting brought this all to life.
