The Pulitzer Prize Board has just announced that English, by Sanaz Toossi has won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Other finalists included: On Sugarland by Aleshea Harris and The Far Country by Lloyd Suh.

Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (May 19–June 10), one of opera's most beloved works, receives its first new Met staging in 19 years from acclaimed English director Simon McBurney. In his Met debut, McBurney lets loose a volley of theatrical flourishes, incorporating projections, aerial and sound effects, physical comedy, a hovering platform, and acrobatics to match the spectacle and drama of Mozart's work. Maestro Nathalie Stutzmann—having made her Met debut earlier this season with Don Giovanni—performs Mozart double duty leading both productions running simultaneously. With the pit raised, the Met Orchestra musicians will interact with the cast. Gareth Morrell conducts the May 27 performance.

The Vancouver Art Gallery Presents THE CHILDREN HAVE TO HEAR ANOTHER STORY: ALANIS OBOMSAWIN. The exhibition surveys the lifework of Alanis Obomsawin from the 1960s to the present, demonstrating her remarkable achievements in education, music, documentary cinema and activism that have mobilized Indigenous voices and ideas to transform society.

It was a like coming home with Chita Rivera full circle and approaching a kind of comfortable closure when I attended the Signature Theatre’s Sondheim Award Gala 2023 honoring the Broadway legend Chita Rivera at the Italian Embassy in Washington. DC.  The iconic legend of theatrical music and dance (What a dancer she is!) was feted with the prestigious award from Signature Theatre and a warm response from a very “Chita-friendly” roster of performers and an audience of patrons, fans and supporters. (Rivera has also won about every award in the book including two Tony Awards, a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Kennedy Center Honor).

A special concert on Sunday, April 30 at 2 p.m. presents Argentine-born American composer Osvaldo Golijov's Falling Out of Time (2019), composed for a multicultural, multistylistic instrumental ensemble and presented in a semi-staged performance at Symphony Hall, in association with Celebrity Series of Boston.
