Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club - 2024 Broadway History , Info & More
Willkommen. Bienvenue. Welcome to the Kit Kat Club- home to an intimate and electrifying new production of Cabaret. Experience this groundbreaking musical like never before. The denizens of the Kit Kat Club have created a decadent sanctuary inside Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre, where artists and performers, misfits and outsiders rule the night. Step inside their world. This is Berlin. Relax. Loosen up. Be yourself.
What’s the show about? Set in the waning days of the Weimar Republic, Cabaret tells the story of Sally Bowles, a free-spirited singer at the Kit Kat Club, and Clifford Bradshaw, an American writer seeking inspiration in Berlin. As the enigmatic Emcee leads the audience through the cabaret's electrifying performances, the outside world grows increasingly dangerous, reflecting the personal and political tensions of the time. The result is a powerful exploration of love, identity, and the cost of complacency.
Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, this revival transforms Broadway's August Wilson Theatre into an immersive, in-the-round venue, recreating the ambiance of a 1930s cabaret. With period-inspired costumes, evocative lighting, and a visceral staging concept, the production blurs the line between audience and performer, drawing you deep into the story.
London’s hottest ticket arrived on Broadway in Spring 2024 with Academy and Tony Award winner Eddie Redmayne reprising his Olivier Award-winning performance as the Emcee, and introducing Gayle Rankin as the Toast of Mayfair, Sally Bowles. Both earned Tony nominations for their performances. Since then, Adam Lambert and Auliʻi Cravalho have taken over, bringing a fresh perspective to these iconic roles.
Cabaret, which originally debuted on Broadway in 1966, has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff – based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. This marks the fourth Broadway revival of the beloved show.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Cabaret or experiencing it for the first time, this revival is a must-see. Step inside the Kit Kat Club, where every detail immerses you in a world of beauty and danger, and witness a production that is both exhilarating and hauntingly relevant.

FEATURED REVIEWS FOR Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club

As for the show itself (I know, it almost seems like an afterthought), it has been given an undeniably powerful if somewhat imperfect staging. Among its chief strengths are its lead performances, or at least most of them, with Eddie Redmayne repeating his Olivier Award-winning performance (at least through early September) as the leering Emcee. He’s not quite as menacing as Alan Cumming in the Mendes production, at times seeming fragile and almost adorable. But the actor is certainly mesmerizing, using his angular physicality and androgynous looks to tremendous effect and employing his natural charisma to such a degree that you can’t take your eyes off him. During many dramatic scenes involving the other characters he silently lurks at the edge of the stage, doing nothing but making it seem like everything.

The triumph of this iteration is how it anticipates its audience, teasing them with frothy liberation before making them gasp at Nazi armbands and shattered windows. As the Emcee oversees, or even appears at times to orchestrate, these national contradictions, it’s hard not to feel queasy at the dissonance. Particularly, I’d imagine, if you paid the upcharge for a stage-side meal. When the drumroll closes the show, a new aesthetic takes hold, complete in its muted menace. Dramatic irony is the play’s engine; we know there’s no changing the outcome. But when we sit pretty at the Kit Kat Club — tipsy, titillated, terrified — it’s not too late for us.
