WSC Avant Bard, celebrating 30 years of thoughtful, provocative work, announces three mainstage productions including a spring repertory, as well as an upcoming benefit featuring comic poetry readings from local acting icons Holly Twyford and Rick Foucheux.

This Friday, Grammy-nominated artist, JANIVA MAGNESS, releases her new album, Change in the Weather: Janiva Magness Sings John Fogerty, and finds herself at the nexus of re-invention and tradition. The album reframes 12 songs curated from the Creedence Clearwater Revival leader's catalog in Magness' soaring, soul-centered style. She follows a lineage of classic singers who have made albums devoted to exploring the work of a single writer within the Great American Songbook—such historic recordings as Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin and Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook.

America's legendary singer and songwriter, Don McLean, will be featured on SiriusXM's Elvis Radio (Channel 19) this Saturday, July 20 at 12 noon ET/11am CT. McLean chats with life-long Memphian, and morning host of Elvis Radio, DJ Argo. The hour long interview special traces McLean's connection to the King of Rock & Roll, including Presley's performance of McLean's classic hit song 'And I Love You So.' The Country Music Association's acclaimed CMA Songwriters Series Presented by   U.S. Bank has announced a performance in Phoenix at Mesa Arts Center's Piper Repertory Theater Wednesday, Aug. 21 featuring Lauren Alaina, Ingrid Andress, Marti Lynn Dodson and Mickey Guyton. The series hosts an intimate round of performances with some of Country Music's top songwriters taking turns sharing the stories behind their hit songs and performing them as originally written. WSC Avant Bard's Script in Play Festival, started in 2016, has been an opportunity to test out shows for full production treatment through the guise of a series of staged readings and post-play discussions. Written and performed by rising professional talent, these readings have led to some memorable productions, including new versions of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night and Lauren Gunderson's hit Emilie: La Marquise Du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight. In 2017, a reading of playwright Matt Minnicino's 'distillation' - not 'adaptation,' as we get into below - of Moliere's The Misanthrope was performed. Written entirely in rhyming couplets, it follows a professional cynic who falls in love with an ingenue, and finds his devotion to insincerity tested. Now, it's the capper of Avant Bard's 29th season. I spoke to Minnicino about his career thus far, the adaptation process, and why audiences should be excited for this show.

A teen-helmed production of the Tony Award-winning rock musical, Spring Awakening, is set to open at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood on May 11, 2019. Directed by 14-year-old wunderkind George Baron, (whose directorial debut for the stage was his jukebox-styled Broadway musical revue I Confess at the Whitefire Theatre), the cast also features up-and-coming young talents performing in the adolescent roles with musical direction by Estani Frizzell. The musical is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 controversial play about teenagers trying to find their way in the world amid the angst of sexual discovery. Featuring music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the original Broadway production received eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and was hailed by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle as the Best Musical of the Year.

Following critically acclaimed runs at the Old Red Lion and Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2017, Crowded Room today announces that its production The Listening Room will embark on a UK tour in 2019. The production will visit theatres, prisons and schools across the country including The Lowry in Salford, Northern Stage in Newcastle and Theatr Clwyd in Mold. The album debuts this week at #4 on theBillboard 200, #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and continues to receive rave reviews.
