Theatre for a New Audience founding artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz, having just received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 OBIEs, today announces TFANA's 40th anniversary season. The 2019-2020 programming exemplifies what makes TFANA, in the words of the OBIE committee, one of the city's most vital institutions championing adventurous and urgent productions of Shakespeare alongside other writers.

Playwright Christopher Shinn, who directs Second Stage's new production of his 2008 Pulitzer finalist Dying City, places a large black void at the upstage wall as part of designer Dane Laffrey's otherwise realistic depiction of rather non-descript Manhattan apartment. Don't, like this reviewer did, spend any part of your time at this 90-minute drama waiting for some practical use of this seemingly out-of-place feature. Its purpose, perhaps, is to represent that emptiness that can be felt by both individually and collectively after.

Between 2005 and 2009, eight women were found dead in or around the small town of Jennings, Louisiana, their bodies discarded in backroads and bayous. While the causes of death were varied – some with their throats slashed while many were too decomposed to determine – all were connected to one another, oftentimes seen with the same people in their final hours. With a few suspects but no one ever charged, the unsolved cases remain a source of fear and frustration in the community. Now, tired of waiting for justice, one victim's family takes us deep inside their search for answers, revealing a dark underbelly of a small southern town riddled by drug use, violence, and allegations of a major cover-up. Produced by Entertainment One (eOne), the four-part explosive special DEATH IN THE BAYOU: THE JENNINGS 8 premieres on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 from 10pm-12am.

Actor/Director Charles Weldon, who was Artistic Director of The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) since 2005, died December 7 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, NYC. He was 78.

According to Variety, Apple has ordered a new series from J.J. Abrams straight to series. The new show reunited Abrams with Jennifer Garner, who is set to star. The two previously worked together on the hit series ALIAS. The new show is based on the 2017 memoir “My Glory Was I Had Such Friends' by Amy Silverstein. One of the great things about DC theatre is that we have the opportunities to experience theater from all over the world, including from some of the most artistically renowned companies.  Take for example the Druid Theatre Company in Galway, Ireland.  Today's subject Garry Hynes is living her theatre life as Artistic Director of that esteemed company.  The Druid's production of Waiting for Godot is embarking on its year-long tour with a run at Shakespeare Theatre Company through May 20.

Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) will host Druid, Ireland's most celebrated theatre company, and their critically acclaimed production of Waiting for Godot. Directed by Tony Award-winner Garry Hynes, Druid's production of Samuel Beckett's absurd, anarchic masterpiece will make its regional premiere at the Lansburgh Theatre (450 7th Street, NW) from April 17 through May 20, 2018 before it travels on to Chicago.
