For oh-so many reasons, it seems there is finally a feeling of optimism in the air as we emerge from the dark days of 2020. San Francisco’s 42nd Street Moon has decided to capitalize on that with their star-studded virtual Gala You Can’t Stop the Beat, which streams on Sunday, February 28th beginning at 6:00pm PST. You Can’t Stop the Beat will be hosted by Broadway actor and beloved “Moonie” Jason Graae and feature performances from a number of Tony winners and nominees. Musical theatre luminaries Liz Callaway, Michael Maguire, Faith Prince and Emily Skinner, plus dozens of other musical theater artists from the Bay Area and beyond will perform numbers from favorite musicals such as Hairspray, Come From Away, Bye Bye Birdie, Hamilton and many more. All proceeds from the virtual gala will support programs that are critical to the expansion of Moon’s programming and continuation of their mission - including MoonSchool’s education and outreach programs and the renovation of their home at the Gateway Theatre. BroadwayWorld recently caught up with Daniel Thomas, who shares duties as Moon’s Co-Executive Director with Daren A.C. Carollo. Thomas’ current hopefulness and gratitude for having made it through a difficult year is palpable. Putting this particular gala together has clearly been a joy, and Thomas is confident that Moon audiences have much to look forward to in the coming year.

One enthusiastic parent whose child participated in Segerstrom Center for the Arts’   Musical Theatre Training Program this past fall said, “Please offer more musical theatre classes soon!”  And so, the Center’s Education Department has announced a new series of classes for aspiring young performers ages 9-18 in February.

Andy Macktastic is debuting his new single, 'Good Times' on January 15th available on all digital platforms. Andy is a singer-songwriter who has also been known as a comedy writer and creator for SomeEcards, and for appearing in multiple productions of 42nd Street, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Beauty and the Beast, among others, around the country.

The Des Moines Playhouse in collaboration with Clive Davis Arts Productions brings a special holiday concert from Liz Callaway. Home for the Holidays will stream live at 6:00 PM, Friday, Dec. 11, 2020. Tickets purchased through The Playhouse website are $20 per device (not per person) and reflect a discount over public prices. In addition, a portion of the ticket price is donated to The Playhouse.

The Des Moines Playhouse initiates its new program, Onyx Script Reading Series, at 6:30 PM, Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020. The series' first script is Widows by Gillian Flyn and Steve McQueen.  The Des Moines Community Playhouse held the 2020 Dionysos Awards, virtually, on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020. The theatre honored eight backstage, guest services, and education volunteers, and announced eight acting awards. The evening began with a number from the theatre's Celebration of the Century, held on Nov. 2, 2019, and concluded with a song from 2018 Dionysos Award double-recipient, Blake Clyde.
