The 2019 National Black Theatre Festival has ended with memories of grandeur and spectacular stage plays. Here is my review of the productions I attended.

The Grove Street Stompers were formed in 1959 by band leader and piano player Bill Dunham.  This fabulous group's repertoire includes samples of Dixieland, New Orleans and swing styles with tunes made famous by such greats as Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton.

The North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NC Black Rep) announces that George C. Wolfe's Tony Award Winning musical, Jelly's Last Jam, will be the opening night performance at the 2019 National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF).

Today, Tech N9ne continues his Kathartic visual series with a new music video: 'EF U' (Easier for You) feat. Krizz Kaliko and Jelly Roll. 'EF U' (Easier for You) addresses mental health and focuses on a message of suicide prevention. At the top of the song, Tech N9ne dedicates the track: 'This is dedicated to the ones that are broken / Stay here with us / Your time to shine is coming.'

Birdland has announced its upcoming May program!

Australian musical theatre stars Michael Cormick and Melissa Langton, multi award-winning singer/songwriter Nina Ferro and singer, musical theatre and cabaret artist Danielle Matthews are among the stellar line-up of performers featuring in Arts Centre Melbourne's 2019 High Tea Live series. Previously known as Jazz High Tea, High Tea Live offers a high culture treat with an outstanding program featuring jazz, pop, cabaret, and Broadway. The beloved Arts Centre Melbourne tradition, features a different act on the first Sunday of every month from May until December.

With under two weeks to go until opening, Underbelly Festival Southbank has 31 more shows for 2019 including international drag sensation Courtney Act - the star who gained global recognition for starring in Australia's Got Talent, RuPaul's Drag Race and Celebrity Big Brother UK returning with her acclaimed show Under the Covers.

Hit songwriters J. Fred Knobloch, Thom Schuyler, Tony Arata and renowned harmonica player Jelly Roll Johnson will present the first true in-the-round performance for the Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series at The Studio at Opry City Stage in the heart of Times Square on Friday, September 14, 2018. Knobloch and Schuyler originated the first in-the-round show at Nashville's famed Bluebird Cafe over 36 years ago. Set in the center of the room, in-the-round has evolved into the venue's signature format, and the two creators, along with Arata and Johnson have been dubbed “The Bluebird Cafe's Fab Four.” 

Legendary actor, director, singer & choreographer Maurice Hines is set to play The Triad (158 West 72nd Street) on Saturday 8/25 at 7pm. Hines is the brother of the late dancer Gregory Hines and best known for starring in Frances Ford Coppola's 'The Cotton Club', Broadway's 'Sophisticated Ladies,' 'Eubie' 'Jelly's Last Jam' & 'Uptown. Broadway Veteran Ted Louis Levy, garners a double nomination for the 2018 Big Easy Awards. Fresh from taping an appearance with New Orleans native son Harry Connick Jr., Ted Louis Levy receives nominations for both 'Choreography' and 'Best Lead Actor in A Musical' in the roll of another New Orleans Icon, Mr. Ferdinand Joseph La Menthe Morton a.k.a Jelly Roll Morton in Jelly's Last Jam.

High school students, teachers and parents across Houston are celebrating and filled with anticipation as the nominations for the 16th Annual Tommy Tune Awards have just been announced on facebook.com/tommytuneawards. Emmy-winner and native Houstonian, Jim Parsons announced the nominees for Best Musical via video on the Tommy Tune Awards Facebook page. Parsons, who started his career on the stage in Houston, will star in The Boys in the Band on Broadway next month.

Dan Levinson and his all-star band celebrate the music of those early days of jazz at the Bickford Theatre for one night only on Monday, February 26th at 7:30 pm.  Entitled Dan Levinson's Jazz 101: The Trailblazers of America's Original Art Form, the concert features the music of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Jelly Roll Morton, The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Clarence Williams, Eddie Condon, Duke Ellington and more.
