Somewhere Over the Border, written by Brian Quijada and directed by Raymond O. Caldwell, is a DC premiere musical inspired by the true story of Quijada's mother's immigration from El Salvador in the 1970s. The show reimagines The Wizard of Oz, following Reina as she travels north to the Mexican border, gathering friends, facing dangers, and holding onto the memory of the child she left behind. The production features a mix of musical genres including cumbia, Mexican mariachi boleros, rock, and hip hop. The show balances whimsy and hardship to honor the immigrant journey and the humanity of those who undertake it.
