Several years ago, I remember watching the Tony Awards and seeing Broadway power couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker presenting the award for Best Score and getting all giddy and nerdy over it because "NEW SONGS!" Well that's how I feel every summer at Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals. I get to see what's out there up and coming and maybe get to walk away seeing a new gem. And this year was no exception with a couple of shows blowing me away. Now, of course, these are workshops and staged readings of shows, so we cannot really review them, but I can at least tell you what they offered us.
Mirror Stage Announces First Show for the 2018-19 Season

On the heels of the successful 2017 debut of the Expand Upon staged reading series, Mirror Stage proudly announces Expand Upon: INCARCERATION as the first show of the 2018-2019 Season. For each new Expand Upon in the series, the community selects a theme, and Mirror Stage commissions two local playwrights to develop 30-60 minute plays, using the same multi-generational, multi-racial cast. For the second Expand Upon staged reading, the community chose the theme of Incarceration, and Mirror Stage commissioned The Assailant by Alma Davenport, and The Swimming Pool by Stacy D. Flood.

Whether it's a $5 donation or a $50,000 donation, Allison Rabbitt knows that donors of all levels are needed to sustain art forms such as opera-every gift matters. With more than 18 years of experience fundraising for some of Seattle's impactful nonprofits, Rabbitt was recently appointed by General Director Aidan Lang to lead Seattle Opera's Development Department. Rabbitt will also ensure the completion of the $28.5 private fundraising campaign for Seattle Opera's new home at Seattle Center.

Book-It Repertory Theatre will open its 2018-2019 season with Jane Eyre. Called the 'first historian of the private consciousness', author Charlotte Bronte explores classism, personal agency, and feminine spirituality in this Gothic mystery. Julie Beckman adapted and directed Jane Eyre for Book-It in 1999 and is directing the 2018 production.
A Masterclass In Political Intrigue – RICHARD III Starts September 12 at Seattle Shakespeare

A wheeler-dealer charlatan has taken control of the country… and everybody underestimated him. Seattle Shakespeare Company launches its 2018-2019 season with a masterclass in political intrigue, Shakespeare's Richard III. The production is a collaboration with upstart crow collective, and features an all-female acting company. Richard III will be directed by Rosa Joshi, and previews September 12 and 13, opens September 14, and runs through October 7 at the Leo K. Theatre.

Carol Burnett, award-winning actress and best-selling author, will be at Benaroya Hall on Sunday October 21, 2018 with her one woman show, Carol Burnett: An Evening of Laughter and Reflection Where the Audience Asks the Questions. Ms. Burnett was recently nominated for an Emmy for 'The Carol Burnett Show 50th Anniversary Special' which aired on CBS in December of 2017. This is her first Emmy nomination in over a decade. The Primetime Emmy Award winners will be announced on September 17, 2018.

Broadway's Don Darryl Rivera To Host The 10th Annual Gregory Awards

Theatre Puget Sound (TPS) and the Gregory Awards announced today that Broadway's Don Darryl Rivera will host the 10th Annual Gregory Awards, live at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center on Monday, October 22 (7:30pm). This will be Rivera's first time hosting the Gregory Awards, though he has been nominated three times since 2009, most recently receiving Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical in last year's ceremony.
