This summer, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is thrilled to present "Coconut Cake," written by Melda Beaty. The comedy tells the story of four retirees who spend their days debating the mysteries of life over coffee and games of chess at a local McDonald’s. But when a mysterious woman moves to town, tempting Eddie Lee and his chess buddies to indulge in her melt-in-your-mouth coconut cake and medicine cabinet secrets, their lives are changed forever. This play was the winner of the Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin Rolling World Premiere Award at the 2022 National Black Theatre Festival; the award was created by NC Black Rep to discover and develop new African American theatre classics, while promoting collaboration between African American theatre companies. It is premiering at five different theatres in 2024, including WBTT. Show runs June 12-23 in the Donelly Theatre of WBTT (1012 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota); showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturdays as well as on Sunday, June 23. Tickets are $35. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) was founded in December 1999 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to produce professional theatre that promotes and celebrates African American history and experience, engages a broad base of patrons and audiences, supports the development of a dynamic group of aspiring artists and builds self-esteem in youth of color. Tax-deductible gifts from generous individuals, businesses, and foundations underwrite WBTT's annual operating budget. Your support helps to keep tickets affordable as well as provides funds to mentor new local talent and to develop high-quality productions. In addition, your gifts allow us to offer theater experiences to an underserved population. If you believe in the purpose of our mission, then we hope you will support us financially to ensure our mission is achieved.
