Review: THE LAST ROMANCE at Florida Studio Theatre

Florida Studio Theatre's final main stage production of the season is none other than the charming play, THE LAST ROMANCE. Set in a cozy dog park (following the paw prints of "DOG MOM" - are we sensing a theme here?), this one-act play encapsulates the essence of what we adore about this theatre's productions.

The tunes of lively Italian Big-Band music by the likes of Perry Como and Dean Martin play as you enter the theatre and set the scene for an evening filled with Italian style whit and nostalgia. The spotlight is on Ralph Bellini, portrayed by the talented John Guerrasio, as he leisurely strolls through a local dog park, sans any dog of his own. Not too far behind is his ever-persistent sister, Rose(playing the perfect nagging Italian sister is Bonnie Black), who, in true Italian fashion, is insistent on him coming home for supper. What starts off as a seemingly ordinary encounter soon unfolds as their quirky dynamic unravels before the audience's eyes. Prepare to be entertained as the timeless humor of Italian culture takes center stage!

In a delightful twist of fate, the vivacious Carol Reynolds, hailing from a not-so-distant land(on the other side of the park) but from a vastly different culture, enters the scene, masterfully portrayed by the vibrant Laura Gardner. Carol's refined air and charm instantly captivate the attention of Ralph, setting the stage for THE LAST ROMANCE to take flight. Through their encounters, Ralph introduces her to the enchanting world of opera, imparts his wisdom on communicating with animals, and instills in her a bright outlook on life's daily adventures. In return, Carol ignites Ralph's curiosity and steers him towards exciting new possibilities beyond his daily routines. This harmonious exchange sets the stage for a promising future, brimming with youthful enthusiasm and plans yet to unfold!

THE LAST ROMANCE, explores the issues of aging and love, but doesn't shy away from the tough stuff like wrinkles and heartache. With a sprinkle of humor and a dash of wisdom, it delves into the joys and sorrows that come with getting older. And let's not forget the universal truth it reveals - that deep down, we all crave companionship and connection. Because who wants to end up alone? In a charming dance of fate, THE LAST ROMANCE unravels a sweet love story between Ralph and Carol, proving that romance knows no age limits. With every scene, it's a gentle nudge to seize the day and find love in the most unexpected places, even in the silver strands of life.

Directed by the talented Kate Alexander, known for successful productions at FST like BIRTHDAY CANDLES and TROUBADOUR, among others, THE LAST ROMANCE presents a charming tale written by the esteemed two-time Tony Award-winning writer, Joe DiPietro. This show promises a truly delightful experience for all who witness it. So, be prepared for a heartwarming treat when you settle in to watch THE LAST ROMANCE!

THE LAST ROMANCE is currently playing through August 16th and tickets are still available for Matinee and Evening Shows. Get your tickets at https://www.floridastudiotheatre.org/.
