"Swan Lake" is one of the most fantastic and perfect creations of world art, perhaps the most famous ballet in the world. His music and choreography had long considered the masterpiece of the world recognized Ballet, one of the brightest achievements of Russian culture. A White Swan will forever remain a symbol of the Russian Ballet, the symbol of its beauty and grandeur.

The story of "Swan Lake" began in 1875, when commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre young but already famous composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composes music to ballet "at the invitation of the Moscow Directorate write music to ballet" Swan Lake ". I started this work, partly for the sake of money, need, partly because I had long wanted to try myself in this kind of music "(P. I. Tchaikovsky, from the letter to the N.a. Rimsky-Korsakov). Treatment of the composer of such level (and by the time Tchaikovsky had already established four symphonies, the famous Piano Concerto and the Opera "Eugene Onegin") was not common at the time. In the Imperial theatres for this kind of creativity there were established composers – Cesare Pugni, Ludwig Minkus, Riccardo Drigo. Tchaikovsky did not set a goal of a "revolution" in ballet. With his usual modesty, he carefully studied ballet scores, not breaking with the established forms and traditions of ballet performances, from within their musical foundation of high fill content. But now it is generally accepted that it was "Swan Lake" has opened the domestic Ballet unseen musical horizons, the developed subsequently and by Tchaikovsky and his followers.

The music is composed from May 1875 to April, 1876. The ballet is a fabulous story of Knight's time. There are many opinions about his literary sources: known as Heinrich Heine, German storyteller by Johann Muzeusa, a Russian fairy tale about a girl-swans and even Alexander Pushkin, but history itself is completely independent. The idea, probably belonged to the composer, but the authors of the libretto are Vladimir Begichev, Inspector of the Moscow theatres and ballet dancer Vasily Gelzer.

Opening night of performance took place on February 20, 1877 onwards, but, alas, proved extremely unsuccessful. Responsible for the failure of the audience gave the choreographer Wenzel Rejzingera, praised the contemporaries and first performer master consignment Palina Karpakovu.

In those years, the ballet scene is dominated by a monumental ceremonial or entertainment performance. Without unity, the ballet drama coming apart into separate rooms-amusements, the main emphasis was placed on the sumptuous costumes, stage effects and virtuoso solo variations dancers. The creation of this type of performance has contributed to the sometimes brilliant, but generally illustrative and superficial music of Pugni and Ludwig Minkus Ballet Caesar, it drew an eclectic choreography the French ballet master Arthur Saint-Leon. His faithful follower choreographer Julius Reisinger, referring to the first ballet by Tchaikovsky, not guessed the reform was "Swan Lake" Ballet composer-symphonist.
