World Premiere Eco-Opera! Sponsored by Highmark.
Inspired by the work of Rachel Carson, SummerFest's world premiere "Eco-Opera" considers the impact of America's pioneering woman scientist through the eyes of Alice, a young mother-to-be. When she reads Carson's seminal book, Silent Spring (1962), Alice, too, becomes an evangelist for the environment, throwing her Western Pennsylvania family into conflict with the book's environmental warnings, its themes of stewardship and renewal, and the potential impact on her unborn child.
With music by New York-based composer Gilda Lyons, and libretto by acclaimed Pittsburgh playwright Tammy Ryan, this exciting new American work takes on issues of key importance to our world.
