Review: THE RIVER at The Rogue Theatre

by Zach Wetzel - March 09, 2026

THE RIVER by Jez Butterworth is now playing at The Rogue Theatre, and it packs a punch. This deeply intimate work draws viewers into a psychological and surreal world where a man brings a woman (and other women) to a riverside cabin....

Review: UNCLE VANYA at Theatre Artists Studio

by Herbert Paine - March 04, 2026

UNCLE VANYA arrives at Theatre Artists Studio with thoughtful intentions and a capable ensemble, though the results are somewhat uneven. Presented in Conor McPherson’s streamlined adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic, and directed by Carol MacLeod, the production leans heavily into emotional im...

Review: CLUE: LIVE ON STAGE at Gammage Auditorium

by Tim Shawver - February 19, 2026

There have been previous stage versions of the Parker Brothers' board game Clue, none that had any connection to the beloved 1985 film or made any significant mark artistically or commercially....

Review: HENRY V at Southwest Shakespeare Company

by Cheyenne Lewis - February 17, 2026

Wars of the past are viewed by many as a necessary evil, and certain battles are even thought of as glorious or grand. This perspective overlooks the lives lost on both sides, the trauma so many soldiers have faced throughout history, and that many still face today. Southwest Shakespeare Company’s...

by Herbert Paine - February 16, 2026

Lean and evocative, funny and frightening, tender and profane...reckoning with how to survive trauma....

Review: GUYS AND DOLLS at Hale Centre Theatre

by Herbert Paine - February 15, 2026

Mounted with in-the-round polish and flair, Hale Centre Theatre’s GUYS AND DOLLS is bright, brassy, and built on rhythm. And for a few hours in Gilbert, the neon-drenched skyline glows, the dice roll, and Broadway’s Golden Age feels very much alive....

Review: LITTLE WOMEN at The Bridge Initiative

by Cheyenne Lewis - February 11, 2026

Although society may have tried to conceal them, bold and daring women have existed throughout history. Sisterhood and the realities of being a woman in the Civil War era are central themes in this musical adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel. The Bridge Initiative’s concert version o...

In Real Life
In Real Life
Oct 17 – Oct 19, 2025

In Real Life follows a young African-American woman in the late 70s named Charlayne Woodard, who, after “graduating from drama school in Chicago, eagerly packs her bags and heads for New York City to live with her boyfriend and pursue an acting career. Her family is concerned about this move—to say the least. Although Charlayne imagines she will be living in a fabulous East Side apartment, she finds herself in a tiny fifth-floor walk-up with a bathtub in the kitchen. Unfazed, she sets out to have a career as a ‘serious actor.’ Instead, she’s cast in the original company of the hit Broadway musical Ain’t Misbehavin'. In Real Life cannily chronicles Charlayne’s initial seduction into the thrills of [show business] as well as the physical and emotional price of sustaining the energy to do so night after night. In Real Life explores what happens, in the words of Langston Hughes, to ‘a dream deferred.’” Although the show has just one actor, Racquel McKenzie will portray an array of characters, from Charlayne herself, to her mother, to the colorful members of the Ain’t Misbehavin’ cast, and many more.  The play received rave reviews of its Phoenix and Winslow runs:I really loved [In Real Life] . It was engaging, vibrant, alive, and such a good story. With [Racquel McKenzie] playing so many roles —wow, amazing! She must've been exhausted but also exhilarated afterwards. I love her as an actor, and will always come to a FlagShakes play to see her. (Sylvia ) It may sound cliche, but Raquel's performance was a tour de force. She lives Charlayne ("rhymes with pain" the character says and we understand what she means) before our eyes, through the fun, sad, happy, angry, indignant, loving times. There is nothing predictable about her life and as in real life, Charlayne is complex and sometimes she's uncertain about her feelings or what to do next. It feels very real.This is the third FlagShakes show I've attended that was written by an African-American - Crumbs from the Table of Joy, Single Black Female, and In Real Life. All three have been outstanding - insightful, evocative, and topical. In Real Life takes us on the twists and turns of a young Black woman trying to make it on Broadway. She wants to perform counter to the stereotypical singing/dancing role so frequently given to African American performers. Instead she'd like to do straight plays. More Shakespeare, less Fats Waller. But Ain't Misbehavin is her destiny, as is writing some incredible plays, like In Real Life and others. (Mare) In Real Life is riveting! Giving us a behind-the-scenes peek into the darker reality behind the Broadway lights, Racquel McKenzie shines portraying the reluctant musical theatre star, Charlayne Woodard, and all those she encounters on Ms. Woodard's journey to a Tony nomination. A must see! (Myrna)  This play is recommended for audience members 18 years and up or at parental discretion. Includes sensitive language and topics. ...
