A magical wonderland full of pinks and greens have hit the Robinson Center Performance Hall stage, and it is nothing short of spellbinding. I have always been a fan of The Wizard of Oz, but for some reason, I was never able to make it to see Wicked at the movies or on Broadway.
One could be forgiven for feeling a little burned out on Wicked these days. After two super-sized movies and a press tour that seemed to last a decade, Wicked-mania feels a bit on the wane. However, there is no substitute for seeing this show live on stage. This show is more relevant than ever, and the current touring cast are exceptional.
For the last couple of years or so, theatre nerds everywhere have been besotted with the film version of the hit musical Wicked. After the debut of the first installment, anticipation only grew for Part Two, which dropped this past November. But amid all the brouhaha and ballyhoo over the cinematic offerings, the origins of the musical itself were pushed to the background.
Everything Oz continues to enchant and enamor. The national touring production of WICKED landed at Shea's Buffalo Theatre this week. And like that infamous house that dropped from the sky, WICKED has an impact that rivals any of even the most famous Disney musicals. The 2003 Broadway musical was made into a two part movie and after breaking boxoffice records last year with Part I, Part II will be released this month. Audiences will no doubt clamor to the cinemas like the audiences that continue to flock to see the slick stage musical.
