The service organization Dance/NYC has announced that videos from its fully digital 2022 Symposium are now available for public dissemination. This year's event, which occurred on Thursday March 17-Saturday March 19, 2022, marked Dance/NYC's second successful all-digital Symposium. Over three days, 500+ people attended the event built around the theme Life Cycles. Livelihoods. Legacies., including dance artists, choreographers, artistic directors, administrators, funders, educators, policymakers, dance writers, scholars, and students.

Brooklyn-based nonprofit Photoville has announced Photoville NYC 2022 (June 4 - 26), marking the outdoor festival’s celebratory return to a summer format for the first time in 10 years, and filling all five of New York’s boroughs with expansive and vivid views of our world.

Dance the night away with Hairspray at Hershey. The musical adaption of the John Waters' film is a celebration of acceptance and individuality. Niki Metcalf stars as vibrant teen, Tracy Turnblad. Metcalf is a joyful performer who exudes confidence. Metcalf has a good voice and uses it to great effect. One minor critique is that while she is a competent dancer, her moves don't really pop like I have seen in other productions. Tracy usually sticks out (in a good way) compared to the other teens, but that just wasn't coming across. Perhaps the flaw lies the choreography, not the dancer?

According to an announcement from the National Tour team, the performance of Hairspray that was scheduled to play at the State Theatre on April 16 has been rescheduled to February 18, 2023.

Perhaps those of us further into our adult lives may value it a bit less, and this devaluation with age is explored in The Barking Gecko Theatre’s latest work, written by Dan Giovannoni and directed by Luke Kerridge. I caught up with Dan to discuss the show and what we can expect from it.

Hairspray has returned to Glasgow at the nicest “Kings” in town! The show follows the antics of aspiring teen dancer, Tracy Turner, and her dreams of dancing on TV and ending segregation in her 1960s Baltimore community.

The national non-equity touring company of HAIRSPRAY was a hit at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with an audience full of fans of this musical classic. From the opening moments to the finale, the electricity of a youthful and enthusiastic cast is contagious. I found myself wondering how they could maintain that pace and level of energy for the whole show, but they did it.

There is something magical about watching a musical during the final weekend of a show. The company becomes fully integrated in the show and the audience gets to experience art come to life, amplified by months of rehearsal and weeks of applause-fueled performances. The Woodlawn Theatre's performance of Hairspray on Friday, March 25th was a beautiful living art piece that captured the fun campy style of John Waters creation, while also emphasizing the importance of the Civil Rights movement.

One of the great things about children's theatre is that it brings some of our favorite stories from growing up to life on the stage. This also sparks children's imagination to dig into the books they are based on. Des Moines Playhouse is sparking the imagination of this generation and encouraging them to read with their nearly sold-out production of 'Charlotte's Web.'
