The West Coast Premiere of Broken Story by Cyndy A. Marion, directed by Tamara Rappart, opened on Saturday, November 5th at The Sherry Theater. The production, presented by New York City’s White Horse Theater Company in association with 134 West, will run through November 27. See photos from opening night here!
The drama series - from writer and executive producer Raamla Mohamed, and executive producer and director Kerry Washington - is produced by ABC Signature and streams exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. Mohamed leads an all-Black writing staff on the series. “Reasonable Doubt” stars Emayatzy Corinealdi, McKinley Freeman, and more.

A serial killer's backstory always seems to fascinate people more so than that of their prey. But what is it about these vicious murderers that inspires works of art being written about them? That question popped into my head when I heard about the West Coast premiere of Cyndy A. Marion's play Broken Story, which was inspired by the murder of writer Susan Berman and her close relationship with serial killer Robert Durst. I knew I wanted to find out what inspired Cyndy to create the play and how she conducted her research.

The Golden Theatre was the place to be last night as Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog officially opened on Broadway. Directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon, it stars Emmy Award-winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Candyman) and Tony Award-nominee Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, The Tragedy of Macbeth). Production has commenced on the fourth season of Robin Thede’s Emmy®-winning HBO Original sketch comedy series A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW. Returning this season as the core cast members are Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend along with three new featured players: DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, and Angel Laketa Moore joining.
Toronto's ARC theatre company has announced its first show of 2023: the Canadian premiere of MARTYR by Marius von Mayenburg (translated by Maja Zade), directed by Co-Artistic Producer Rob Kempson. MARTYR will run at the Aki Studio Theatre, Daniel's Spectrum, from January 13 to 29, 2023. Opening night is January 14.

Phil Bartlett presents the British première with a sinister wink and eerie humour, but the text is a mismatch of gothic tropes and too unsure of its identity for the production to come together well. It's astonishing how the narrative lack of focus is as prominent as the precision of the direction and technical side of the show is.
