The Last Five Years meets Gravity to introduce their unfortunate lovechild. Daniel steals a spacecraft and leaves Earth; his ex-girlfriend, Emily, is left behind. A trio of scientists breaks down their complicated relationship while Daniel records his days orbiting the planet. On paper, Theo Jamieson’s new musical is a thrilling original concept. The core idea and its philosophical foundations are utterly compelling, so it’s a real shame that they bear very little weight against a shallow plot and uninteresting characters. Adam Lenson (credited as co-creator too) directs with profound empathy for the human race, trying hard to bring to life our harrowing need to feel connected. The material fails him.

Alice Birch’s Romans, a novel is an expansive portrait of literary masculinity through the ages. With an ever-shifting form, an array of subtle references, and an intricate, thought-provoking script, this is a play that many will find difficult and impenetrable. At its core, however, it’s a truly perceptive piece that understands masculinity like little else.
Recently, we had the chance to speak with Oliver Johnstone about playing Marlow in Romans: A Novel. We discussed what his research process is like for getting into character, the importance of discussing the role of masculinity in modern times and even what it’s like to perform in a new work versus a classic piece like a Shakespeare play.

Back in 2023, the Royal Shakespeare Company celebrated the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio with a national playwriting competition. From over 2000 entries, 37, spanning all genres, were picked. Readings for the winning plays were held through the autumn of that year and subsequent productions have been popping up here and there ever since. Nancy Netherwood’s Radiant Boy now landing at Southwark Playhouse directed by Júlia Levai. The writer’s professional debut takes us back to the 80s in North-East of England, where it is believed that a young man is possessed. Back home from studying at King’s College Choir in London, he and his mother keep their friction at bay while they wait for Father Miller to arrive. Can they redeem Russell’s spiritual health? And what is it that’s haunting him exactly?
Horror is one of my favourite genres, and one of cinema’s most profitable genres, but it’s still rarely attempted on stage. There are a handful of big horror stage hits - 2:22 A Ghost Story, The Woman in Black, Ghost Stories - which are gripping and entertaining, but tend to be, as the titles suggest, a particular kind of ghost story, operating on a system of jump scares, sudden blackouts and pre-recorded screams.
The full cast has been announced for the world premiere of Radiant Boy at Southwark Playhouse Borough, written by Nancy Netherwood. Joining the previously announced Renée Lamb and Stuart Thompson are Ben Allen and Wendy Nottingham.

The Prozorov sisters are desperate for entertainment. Plagued by their dreary provincial life, they yearn for the lights and excitement of Moscow, but have to make do with the visiting soldiers. When their only brother marries, their sister-in-law isn’t exactly what they dreamed of. Her lacking sense of fashion and initial insecurity builds up to a sharp bossiness upon becoming Mrs Prozorov, leaving Olga, Masha, and Irina at the mercy of the new lady of the house. If you had to choose one work that represented what Chekhov brings to the table, it would be this.
