BWW Review: ROALD DAHL'S MATILDA THE MUSICAL at Drury Lane Theatre

British novelist Roald Dahl possessed that rare quality in an author of children's books: the ability to captivate the imaginations of his young readers and simultaneously entertain their parents. His distinctive witty prose, dark humor, and eccentric characters are beloved worldwide: a daunting precedent for the Royal Shakespeare Company when it premiered the musical adaptation of MATILDA in 2010, with a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. This production proved wildly successful in the West End (where it is still running), on Broadway, and internationally. Now, Drury Lane Theatre presents the regional premiere, directed and choreographed by Mitch Sebastian.

BWW Feature: 'Meet the Actors' of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Center Stage

Since becoming a critic at Broadwayworld.com, I normally attend a play on opening night. Baltimore Center Stage has always had a tradition of presenting a 'Meet the Actor's Night' one day after opening. My wife and I loved to attend these because they are uniformly informative, educational, and fun. Normally audiences hear about an actor's past work, how long is the rehearsal process, how was it like to work with the director, is this your first time in Baltimore, what is like to work at Baltimore Center Stage.

Judith Ivey Enjoyably Gives Us CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF As A Love Story at Center Stage

Because Williams has so successfully gotten us cheering for Maggie, we in the audience would very much like to see Maggie triumphantly dragging Brick into bed in the final frame, and an interpretation like director Judith Ivey's, which all but promises that, is bound to be a crowd-pleaser. But if a director chooses to make that easy initial choice, that will be about the last easy thing the director will find in this play.
