I am ordering my cap and gown today for the Baldwin Wallace University commencement in May. Leaving this great theatre community is a sobering thought, but the spring semester is so busy there are plenty of distractions.

Going “into the woods” with too much happening on campus! My November theme takes me into the woods, literally, figuratively, and theatrically. The passing of Steven Sondheim on November 26th at the age of 91 makes this blog dedication even more important to me.

Beginning my senior year as a major in arts management and entrepreneurship, I've been lucky to get through some of my less-favorite academic requirements. Yes, things that involve math. The Baldwin Wallace University business management portion of the curriculum is especially rigorous. Intermediate-level accounting and economics taught me to admire students who love that material. I have to credit my accounting and economic professors for building my interest. See what I did there? Who would have guessed that you need money to run a theatre, music or arts business? After completing these required courses, my attitude changed from 'Stayin Alive' to 'I Will Survive.'

The joy and terror of doing cabaret entertainment is that it is amazingly confessional. There are no characters to hide behind. Only music, a performer, and his experiences. The vulnerability is exponentially compounded when the show you set out to do tells the story of your life. It is an extremely courageous thing to do. That is the task that Mark Corpron sets for himself in his show MOVING ON: SONGS OF JOURNEY, which opened last night at Don’t Tell Mama. The show sets out to explore not the destinations we arrive at in life, but rather the journeys that happen in between those destinations. It focuses on a soul with a permanent case of wanderlust and the loneliness that often accompanies such globe-trotting adventures.

David Sabella emerged from the pandemic having learned a lot... but the most salient message in his mind was that it was time to get back on the stage. His new show is proof that his instinct is right.

“I Need Some Of That” follows the release of last year’s “Hero” and “Beginning Of The End,” as well as 2019’s “End Of The Game,” all of which appear on Van Weezer.

As creatively ambitious as it is confounding, THE WHITES illuminates a race-inverted space where Black is white, the Whites are 'black' and...vice versa? Visually, narratively and dramatically, this play is far from subtle; familial archetypes and societal stereotypes collide, challenging us to recognize the Other while coming to grips with our self-awareness of implicit bias, privilege, and social injustice.
