Lin-Manuel Miranda took to Twitter today to announce that Marc Anthony will play Sonny's father, a new character, for the In the Heights film! The tweet came after a Twitter user, @cafebusteloking, called the news three days before Miranda announced it.

After wrapping up rehearsals for the upcoming film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical In The Heights, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the film's cast dropped in on a high school production of the show in Washington Heights!

The 11-Time Tony Award-nominated musical, TOOTSIE, will launch a North American Tour at Shea's Buffalo Theater in Buffalo, New York, in Fall 2020, announced producers Scott Sanders and Carol Fineman. Casting, exact dates and additional cities will be announced at a later date.

Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein today announced the appointment of Travis LeMont Ballenger as Associate Artistic Director. The Globe will have two people in this key position, as Ballenger joins Associate Artistic Director Justin Waldman, who has been at the Globe since 2011. Ballenger and Waldman will report jointly to Edelstein. Ballenger will assume his artistic duties at The Old Globe on May 1.

The Drama League (Gabriel Stelian-Shanks, Executive Artistic Director) today announced the 2019 Drama League Awards Nominees for Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Musical, and the much-coveted Distinguished Performance Award. The nominations were announced this morning by the current stars of Waitress, Shoshana Bean and Jeremy Jordan, at the official announcement event at Sardi's Restaurant, which was streamed live online here at BroadwayWorld.

Olga Merediz, Gregory Diaz IV, and Jimmy Smits have joined the cast of the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's IN THE HEIGHTS.

Vulture reports that Stephanie Bratriz will play Carla in the IN THE HEIGHTS movie. The film is set for a 2020 release and will film uptown this summer. She joins the recently announced Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barerra, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, and Jimmy Smits.

Anthony Ramos will star as Usnavi, Melissa Barerra as Vanessa, Corey Hawkins as Benny, and Leslie Grace as Nina. Earlier today it was announced that Jimmy Smits will play Nina's father, Kevin.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jimmy Smits is in talks to join the film adaptation of In the Heights, according to Collider.

The Riverside Center for the performing Arts in Fredericksburg, Virginia is excited to present The Color Purple opening Wednesday, March 13 and running until Sunday, May 5. The Color Purple opened at The Broadway Theatre in 2005, directed by Gary Griffin, produced by Scott Sanders, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey. The original Broadway production ran from 2005 to 2008, earning eleven Tony Award nominations in 2006. An enthusiastically acclaimed Broadway revival opened in late 2015 and ran through early 2017, winning two 2016 Tony Awards- including Best Revival of a Musical. It is this version that is being staged.

Corey Hawkins is set to play Benny in Jon M. Chu's feature adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's four-time Tony winning musical In the Heights for Warner Bros, according to Deadline.

Despite an earlier report from the Hollywood Reporter, it has been reported that Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno (West Side Story) will not join the cast of the upcoming big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, In The Heights, after all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah and Steven Spielberg, along with Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders, have plans to produce a movie musical of the sweeping Broadway show The Color Purple.
