BWW Review: Wacky, Wickedly Funny, and Wonderful, MSMT's All-Star Cast Romps in 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL

Maine State Music Theatre’s new production of 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL with Dolly Parton’s pulsating score is a high energy, hilarious madcap misadventure that somehow also manages to ring uncannily true. Both a period piece and a contemporary one, this tale of women in the workplace is propelled by zany humor, but also fueled by the empathetic characters at its core. The trio of women embattled with their narcissistic boss are - as Parton, herself, phrased it “just a step on the boss man's ladder” - and yet they sing and dance their way into our hearts in an evening filled with laughter and warmth.

Review: MONARCH THEATRE, Park Row

Almost as secretive and hidden away as the Batcave, Soho’s Park Row is a restaurant dedicated to the Caped Crusader. At its heart lies Monarch Theatre, an immersive dining experience which combines projections, magic and a sumptuous tasting menu.

Review: Splendid Donizetti Rarity POLIUTO Showed Its Great Bones via Crutchfield's Teatro Nuovo

Usually, when long-neglected works somehow find their way to the forefront, we find there’s a pretty good reason for the lack of interest. Happily for us, this does not apply to Donizetti’s POLIUTO, which Will Crutchfield’s Teatro Nuovo performed last weekend at Montclair State’s Kasser Theatre and on July 19th at Jazz from Lincoln Center’s Rose Theatre. It’s filled with wonderful music that the current performers--particularly the suave tenor of Argentine Santiago Ballerini in the title role and the potent coloratura soprano Chelsea Lehnea--deliver with aplomb.

Review: AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, Jermyn Street Theatre

It is not often that Fringe venues act as platforms for important narratives from the older generation. Based on tonight’s performance of After All These Years, I can only ask ‘Why not?’.  After winning the 2023 Outstanding Theatre Award at Brighton Fringe, After All These Years transfers to the Jermyn Street Theatre where I am sure it will enjoy continued success.

Student Blog: Balancing a Restful & Productive Summer

Summer is the ideal season for theatre students for many reasons: summer stocks, the sleep we never had time for, and of course, simply having the spare time in general. We have so much time on our hands now (unless you’re like me doing summer stock work) sometimes it may be a struggle finding ways to spend it all. There are plenty of things you can do to stay productive while still enjoying your vacation so you’re more than prepared to reenter a busy school year.

Review: Tap, Snap, and Sway at SOPHISTICATED LADIES at Beef & Boards

Looking for twentieth-century aesthetics (think an Art Deco club) and swingin’ music, making your heart sing, you’re in luck. Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies” is a 1981 musical revue of the back of Duke’s celebrated history. From early songs like “The Mooche” and “Mood Indigo” to later hits “I’m Beginning to See the Light” and “Satin Doll,” this vogueish revue taps (literally) the Duke’s music back on the stage where it rightfully belongs.

Review: THE BODYGUARD: THE MUSICAL at Theatre By The Sea

What did our critic think of THE BODYGUARD: THE MUSICAL at Theatre By The Sea? I generally don’t get into love stories all that much-just a general preference-but Theatre By The Sea’s third entry into its 90th season, “The Bodyguard: The Musical” was so much more.
