On Site Opera to Receive $15,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment's first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of a $15,000 grant to On Site Opera to support the commission ofStay, a new, immersive opera composed by John Glover with libretto by Kelly Rourke. The site-specific opera is being devised for a 19th-century house on Governors Island just south of Manhattan.

Known for staging “the ultimate in intimate productions” (The New York Times), On Site Opera (OSO) presents the U.S. premiere and new site-specific production of Darius Milhaud's La mère coupable (The Guilty Mother). For the premiere, OSO partners with the Darius Milhaud Society and the award-winning International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). The site-specific production celebrates the 125th birthday of Milhaud and is dedicated to Katharine Warne, composer and founder of the Darius Milhaud Society. La mère coupable also marks the completion of OSO's three-year Figaro Project, in which the company is staging lesser-known operatic adaptations of French playwright Beaumarchais' (1732-1799) famed trilogy of Figaro plays.

The Monte Carlo-themed gala, ABINGDON PLAYS TO WIN, benefited the Abingdon Theatre Company -- beginning its 18th season on Friday, October 29 with the New York premiere of Reggie Cheong-Leen's THE NANJING RACE -- included salutations to Mr. Brustein by his esteemed colleagues and the presentation of an AB*IE Award for Excellence in Theatre.
