Central Works 2023 Season concludes with the comedy THE ENGINE OF OUR DISRUPTION, written by the award-winning playwright in residence Patricia Milton  (Oct 14–Nov 12, previews Oct 12 & 13), with this timely satire in which Artificial Intelligence meets Authentic Misconduct.

After three seemingly endless years, Maine's theatrical landscape has truly begun to come to life again after the pandemic. I am thrilled to be able to pen this article, having experienced a 2022 that saw the remarkable 'comebacks' of Maine's theatres. While the year was not without continued challenges, these brave, resilient companies managed to produce first-class live theatre for grateful audiences. These are my personal choices of the best in Maine for 2022, grouped by theatre company and show.

Review: THE VICTORIAN LADIES DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE Confronts Convention, Gender Bias - and a Serial Killer

The Public Theatre’s production of Patricia Milton’s THE VICTORIAN LADIES DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE is a witty, sophisticated, clever examination of late Victorian mores, skillfully embedded with subtle feminist rhetoric, and all encased in the classic mystery thriller format. Add to this recipe a handful of zany, colorful characters and some facile repartee, and the end result is a delightfully period piece with a compelling contemporary twist.

THE MUSEUM ANNEX Closes Central Works' 2022 Season in October

Central Works' 2022 season concludes with a new comedy from the Central Works Writers Workshop The Museum Annex written by Mildred Inez Lewis, playing Oct 15 - Nov 13 at the historic  Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Avenue, Berkeley. Central Works is committed to premiering new works inspired by social issues, contemporary texts, and history.

DREAMING IN CUBAN Comes to Central Works This Month

Dreaming in Cuban, a poignant new comedy by award-winning writer Cristina García, opens with a press night on Saturday, Jun 25, and runs through July 24 (previews Jun 23 & 24). This is a new adaptation by Cristina García of her celebrated first novel developed in the Central Works Writer’s Workshop.

ESCAPE FROM THE ASYLUM at Central Works Extends Through April 24

Central Works’ opening production of its 2022 season, the comedy Escape from the Asylum by award-winning playwright Patricia Milton, has extended through April 24th (originally scheduled to close April 17). The opening night response to Escape from the Asylum from audiences and the press alike was rollicking.

Central Works Begins Season With ESCAPE FROM THE ASYLUM This Month

CENTRAL WORKS begins its 32nd season on Mar 19 with the world premiere of a madcap mystery “Escape From the Asylum” written by Patricia Milton from the Central Works Writers Workshop. Patricia Milton’s “Escape From the Asylum” is directed by Gary Graves running Mar 19–Apr 17 at the historic  Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Avenue, Berkeley.
