Key West's Red Barn Theatre will soon present the Regional Premiere of Buyer & Cellar, a one-man show by playwright Jonathan Tolins. Enjoying immediate success at the non-profit Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Buyer & Cellar moved to the Barrow Street Theatre for an Off-Broadway run. Playing to sold-out houses for months, Buyer & Cellar received an Off-Broadway extension until April of 2014. The critically acclaimed production went on to receive a Chicago engagement followed by a US Tour through November 2014.
Beloved Tony-winning star of stage and screen Laura Benanti is once again proving what she is Broadway's favorite 'Superwoman' with the release of her new single, 'I Like Musicals.' Not only does the hilarious Benanti sing the song, but she also wrote its music and lyrics, and is backed up by The Skivvies, Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, who also provided the arrangement. The trio teamed up last year for the Theatre Etiquette Instructional song 'Look Up.'
If you had asked Lauren Molina during her high school days in Detroit what she was going to be when she grew up, the self-described 'brainiac,' would probably have answered, 'A doctor or a vet.' Though not thinking of a life behind the footlights, she did attend arts summer programs at Northwestern, Yale and NYU.
Laugh your (BODY PART)_____ off as 'Brenda Braxton presents Villain: DeBlanks' continues January 3, and performs the first Sunday of each month at 7:30pm at The Triad NYC. There is no doubt that, for better or for worse, Broadway is the most visible home for theatre in the world. For many people across the country, it is the only thing that they know about the art form, even if there is a local playhouse just down the street. Like Xerox to copiers, and Kleenex to tissues, for many, the word 'Broadway' simply means theatre. Therefore, often the shows that call Broadway home become our greatest gateway to getting people to consume theatre at the local level. However, Broadway, by its very definition, is inaccessible. It is limited to a small handful of theaters located in New York City, in the northeast corner of the country, at least 500 miles from 18 of the top 20 most populated cities in America (not including itself and Philadelphia). For many, that is a trip that they just can't afford to make. In addition, with premium seats and ever-escalating ticket prices, even if a family of four can afford to make it to New York, four seats to a Broadway show is often cost prohibitive.
What happens when you mix equal parts Murder, She Wrote with Mad Libs? You get Billy Mitchell's rib-tickling theatrical confection VILLAIN: DeBLANKS. Currently enjoying a residency at The Triad, audiences can catch the madcap hilarity on the first Sunday of each month through April 3, 2016.
Hailed as an 'off-the-hook inclusive comedy...with big laughs' by KABC-LA, 'Brenda Braxton presents Villain: DeBlanks' amazing December 6 cast featured the gloriously funny Geneva Carr (currently on Broadway in 'Hand to God'), wickedly clever Tony-winner Daisy Eagan ('Secret Garden'), the uniquely delightful Lauren Elder ('Sideshow,' 'HAIR'), multi-talented award-winning composer/lyricist Bobby Cronin ('Mary and Max,' '(un)Lucky in Love'), hilarious and handsome Hunter Ryan Herdlicka (current revival of 'Once Upon A Mattress,' 'A Little Night Music'), and inveterate reviewer, former president of the Drama Desk Awards, and champion of the theater, Peter Filichia.
