Review: THEATRE FOR ONE, Barbican

The best of Irish playwriting lands at the Barbican in an exciting project. An audience of one steps into a booth blindly for a play they don’t get to choose. Six five-minute one-act shows penned by Enda Walsh, Marina Carr, Mark O’Rowe, Joy Nesbitt, Louise O’Neill and Katie Holly are offered on rotation by one actor for one spectator in a truly unique individual experience. What happens when you remove the social element from a live performance? Does the physiology of theatre alter when you’re alone with it? How does intimacy impact the relationship with a story?

Wright State Theatre Presents Marina Carr's Irish Drama BY THE BOG OF CATS, February 2 – February 11

Wright State Theatre will present Marina Carr's Irish Drama, BY THE BOG OF CATS, a furious, uncompromising tale of greed and betrayal, of murder and profound self-sacrifice. Loosely based on Euripides' tragedy Medea, and set on the bleak, ghostly Irish landscape of the Bog of Cats, this provocative drama discloses one woman's courageous attempts to lay claim to that which is hers, as her world is torn in two. This area premiere opens Spring offerings to the public on the Festival Stage.

The Met celebrates the new year with a new production of Bizet's Carmen by acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell, opening on Sunday, December 31, at 6:30PM. In her highly anticipated Met debut, Cracknell reinvigorates the classic story of deadly passion with a staging that moves the action to modern day and explores themes that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence, abusive labor structures, and the desire to break through societal boundaries.

Review: PORTIA COUGHLAN, Almeida Theatre

Marina Carr’s award-winning play returns to London directed by Carrie Cracknell and starring Conversations with Friends starlet Alison Oliver (who trod the same boards earlier this year in Women, Beware the Devil). A compelling analysis of toxic dysfunction and female pain, Portia Coughlan is a jarring family drama shackled by tragedy. It propels Oliver into theatre stardom.
