Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic LITTLE WOMEN has been made into virtually every form of media imaginable. Whilst the process of condensing a well loved and thematically dense book misses the mark in some places, the creatives from Emergent Academy have put enough into this performance to make for an enjoyable trip to the theatre.

Directed by Cal McCrystal and Georgia Murphy, Garry Starr: Classic Penguins takes audiences on an adventure through as many Penguin Classics books as possible with our host, Garry Starr (Damien Warren-Smith). There’s just one thing that’s a bit unusual - Starr is in the nude. Well, not exactly. He is wearing a tailcoat and flippers, but that’s it.

There’s unfortunately little about the current tour of 'Little Women' that will bring this show new audiences. It often feels like the purpose of the musical may be more to tell the sisters’ love stories than to tell the story of their love for each other, and the production choices for this tour do little to save it from its lackluster material.
