Citadel Theatre will produce Jen Silverman's acclaimed dark comedy  THE ROOMMATE, from February 1 through March 3, according to Artistic Director Scott Phelps. The production will feature Actor's Equity members Ellen Phelps and Laurie Carter Rose as the middle-aged unmarried women who find themselves living together as housemates. Citadel co-founder Ellen Phelps will play Sharon, the shy, divorced Iowan who takes in a roommate to bring in some additional income.

100 students from four local New Jersey Schools - Maple Avenue School (Newark), LINK Community School (Newark), Marion P. Thomas Charter School (Newark), and Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts (East Orange) - came together for the first time to perform four sections of their unique collaborative musical theater piece Big Deal on May 21. The new one act is the culmination of an innovative musical theater partnership between NJPAC and Johnny Mercer Foundation (JMF). The students wrote and rehearsed the musical over nine months in four separate parts and put the pieces together for the first time in front of their family and friends

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and The Johnny Mercer Foundation announced today a partnership on a unique new program, the only of its kind in the country, for 100 Newark and East Orange middle school students. In The Johnny Mercer Foundation /NJPAC Musical Theater Residency Program, students from four schools - Maple Avenue School (Newark), LINK Community School (Newark), Marion P. Thomas Charter School (Newark), and Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts (East Orange) - will study the history of the American Musical and the creative, rehearsal and performance process. Each class will then individually create sections of a joint musical, coming together at the finale to perform the full, collaborative musical on May 21, 2014 at NJPAC.

NJPAC & The Second City Partner for New Improv Training Site

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and The Second City, the country's leading improv comedy troupe, today announced a partnership that adds Newark to Hollywood, Toronto and Chicago as a training site for the revered company's comedy improvisation workshops for aspiring comedians of all ages. The courses, to be held in NJPAC's Center for Arts Education in August 2014, will include two sets of classes for teens, one with curriculum specifically designed for students with the Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as a course for adults. With this program, NJPAC adds the comedy genre to its arts education offerings, allowing students to explore the fundamentals of improvisation as they study the same building blocks of scene-work used on Second City's stages by the likes of Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey. Registration begins in January 2014 at www.njpac.org.

Following nine months of intensive training and exposure to the Great American Songbook and American musical theater with artist/teachers in residence under the direction of Victor Burks, NJPAC, one hundred students from four New Jersey schools collaborated on the creation of a new musical which they performed for the first time all together at NJPAC last week.
