The fully renovated State Theatre New Jersey presents the reimagined 50th Anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar for four performances on Friday, June 9 at 8pm; Saturday, June 10 at 2pm and 8pm; and Sunday, June 11 at 2pm. This production is a fast paced 90-minutes without intermission. Tickets range from $29-$79.

Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday March 21st. The groundbreaking Andrew Lloyd Webber musical first opened in 1971 and has been rocking theatre since. The musical is roughly based on the Gospel’s accounts of the events leading up the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

 The last time I saw this show live I was a young man. It affected me on a very visceral level. That was back in 1993, the twenty-year celebration. Ted Neely and Carl Anderson starred as Jesus and Judas, respectively. Now, thirty years later, we are at the fifty-year celebration. I was a bit trepidatious about this new modern adaptation. This month, Broadway Across Canada brought JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: the 50th Anniversary Tour to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. This musical phenomenon is a rock-opera showcasing Jesus Christ’s final days leading up to his crucifixion.

It very much feels like a rock concert with loud music and bright lights mixed with beautiful dancing, amazing costuming,  and an emotional retelling of the familiar story of Christ’s last days.
