The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced today that Renée Zellweger is set to receive the illustrious American Riviera Award in January 2020. Zellweger will be recognized for her many attributes to the art of film over the years, and most recently, her work as Judy Garland in LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions' JUDY. The tribute will take place at the historic Arlington Theatre during the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The 20th Anniversary Woodstock Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday with the Closing Night film Marriage Story, directed by Noah Baumbach. Audience ballots from more than 100 films were counted late Sunday night to determine the winners of the Audience Awards. When you first hear the word 'graphic novel,' you likely think about superheroes, but there are so many more genres in the comic book business. Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth created STUMPTOWN, a four-issue hard-boiled detective series that has jumped from page to screen this fall season. Whether it's around the water cooler or on social media, the premiere everyone has been talking about so far is ABC's Stumptown, starring Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, The Avengers). The show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
A strong first episode is always important in ensuing a show's future in its early days. Shows get canned quickly, and if buzz is there from the very beginning, as it was when Stumptown first debuted this past week, it's a good indicator that the show will stick around for a while.
San Francisco Opera announces a cast change for Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), opening on October 11. American soprano Nicole Heaston will make her Company debut in the role of Countess Almaviva, replacing Irish soprano Jennifer Davis who has withdrawn due to illness. Ms. Davis, who was due to make her American opera debut with this role, expects to make a full recovery but a lingering virus and persistent cough have prevented her from participating fully in rehearsals and therefore she has determined it best to withdraw from the production and recuperate at home.

Thomas Wolfe--famed for his novels including “Look Homeward, Angel”--is also remembered for the quotable title of one of his short stories: “Only the Dead Know Brooklyn.” Judging my weekend at Opera Philadelphia's O19 opera festival, and its two world premieres, DENIS & KATYA and LET ME DIE, he could have also written “Only the Dead Know Philadelphia” (though it might have missed the priceless Brooklyn accents used in the story by this southern writer).
