Bloomsday in Melbourne will present BETWEEN THE LINES - THE JAMES JOYCE/GROUCHO MARX LETTERS at fortyfivedownstairs, a literary mystery about a scholar whose discovery of letters between James Joyce and Groucho Marx is stolen by her mentor.
By the mid-1920s the Marx Brothers (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo) were already well known on the vaudeville circuit. Broadway gave their mayhem a larger canvas. Producer Sam Harris commissioned a musical comedy built around them, pairing their improvisational chaos with the polish of Berlin’s songs and Kaufman’s sharp theatrical wit.
Looking back over 2025, it appears I sat in a dark room and wrote barely legible thoughts into a notebook on about 150-odd occasions.
