Review: HENRY V, Royal Shakespeare Theatre

Henry V of England is one of those big roles for an actor. Alfie Enoch follows in the footsteps of Laurence Olivier and Tom Hiddleston as the king who led a battalion of tired and outnumbered soldiers to victory. Excellent performances may save it, but co-artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company Tamara Harvey’s take on this history play is unfortunately bland and unfocused. It’s something we’ve seen too many times before.

Review: THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA, Barbican Theatre

'I’ve seen it before, and I’ll see it again… Just little bits of history repeating.” This Shirley Bassey vocal may not feature on the soundtrack of this stage version of The Buddha of Suburbia, but you can’t help but bring it to mind as you watch events unfold: strikes, political turmoil, far right aggression - staples of the 1970s, but all too familiar to modern audiences.

BWW Review: BAGDAD CAFE, Old Vic

It’s a beautiful thing for the theatre community to be able to be together and connect again. And connecting, in a human sense, is the key theme of Emma Rice’s production of Bagdad Cafe.

Looking Back At Emma Rice's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

It's hard to believe that it's been four years since Emma Rice made her debut at Shakespeare's Globe, beginning her brief tenure as artistic director with the Wonders season and her own production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. As a Shakespeare fan (I was one of those rare beings: someone who actually enjoyed studying his plays at school), I'd been meaning to go to the Globe for some time but had never quite got round to it a?' and I'd never seen anything by Emma Rice before. How times change.
