I could talk for hours and hours about why I think this as a play or a musical should be something that every teenager should watch, listen or read, because nowadays art can save lives.

Broadway’s hit angsty rock musical hits the Garden Mainstage in a spectacular new staging by Artistic Director Edward Carignan and New York City Choreographer Trevor Schmidt. The May 5 performance of the Short North Stage's production of SPRING AWAKENING at the Garden Theater (1187 N. High Street in downtown Columbus) will be more than just opening night for Emma Rose Johnson and Sage Lee.

Porchlight’s SPRING AWAKENING brings out moments of the raw emotion and many of the angsty vibes in the musical with Hlava’s Wendla and Kelch’s Mortiz as powerful anchors in this ensemble of angsty teens (though, aside from Hlava, all the actors are past their teen days). While the production doesn’t solve the musical’s challenges of underbaked characters and heavy-handedness when it comes to the issues presented, Didier’s direction and choreography bring us some nice tableaus, along with Justin Akira Kono’s music direction that highlights the ensemble in key vocal moments.

The play that premiered as 'Spring awakening - A children's tragedy' (Spring awakening - A children's tragedy), was a blow to the society of the early nineteenth century, for openly dealing with issues such as abortion, rape, homosexuality, suicide or child abuse, all of this in the environment of young adolescents who awaken to sexuality, drowned by a hermetic environment that does not help them understand the changes and erotic fantasies that live in their body.

The Alley Theatre announces the line-up for the 2022 Alley All New Festival, June 16 - June 26, 2022. The Festival will feature five new plays including readings, workshop performances, and an early draft preview. Festival playwrights include Monet Hurst-Mendoza, Austin-based Kirk Lynn completing a Thornton Wilder work, Kemp Powers, Don X. Nguyen, and Alley commissioned artist and Houstonian ShaWanna Renee Rivon. 

An upcoming episode of The CW's Riverdale series will feature the American Psycho musical adaption. The series' annual musical episode will take on the Duncan Sheik musical later on in the show's seventh season.
