What did our critic think of FINDING NEIL PATRICK HARRIS at Nu Sass? Whether or not Edmund Gwenn (he played Santa in Miracle on 34th St.) verifiably said on his deathbed that dying is easy but comedy is hard doesn't change the truth, and Donna Hoke's ninety-minute play Finding Neil Patrick Harris proves it. Somewhat thoughtful nevertheless, Finding Neil Patrick Harris considers promises, friendship, competition, the nature of both comedy and happiness, along with the role that being a fan of a TV celebrity can have in a life. Staged by Nu Sass in its 30-seat space, the scene changes run the risk of exhausting the actors, but there really is nowhere to put a stagehand.
The Mary Moody Northen Theatre's 50th Anniversary Season continues with the powerful, These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich, playing November 10 – 20, 2022.
Even so, what sets her apart from fellow actors is the catalog of engagements she drums up away from the spotlight. Sam (as locals fondly call her) is a gifted, do-it-all thespian: a scenic designer who thinks like a director, a choreographer who innovates posthaste, and a handywoman with a soft spot for power tools.
That's not all. A buoyant charm that conspires with a quicksilver pace makes Samantha Cormier the quintessential youth leader of many a theater camp, a role she relishes during the off-season. I'm not sure there's someone more absorbed in various aspects of the theater year-round.

Every year, one of my favorite annual theater traditions is seeing the evening of one acts at the Ridgefield Theater Barn, in Ridgefield, CT. I had the pleasure of continuing that wonderful tradition on Friday, March 18, with AN EVENING OF ONE ACTS 2022 which continues with the consistent first-rate shows and performances I have come to expect and enjoy every year. This show contains seven one acts, mostly with a comedic tone.

The winner of the 2018 Emanuel Fried Award for Outstanding New Play, SONS & LOVERS by Donna Hoke is an engaging comedy about Ellen, a middle-aged woman at a crossroads in her life. Ellen knows the score – her son is gay, and her husband is cheating – but it’s so much easier to pretend than to talk about it. It takes fantasy, farce, and one fabulous mother and son discover just how makeover before the truth flies free, much they have in common, and Ellen realizes the reality she’s been avoiding most is her own.
