The Monarch Of Weirdo Music Gary Wilson Claims His Throne On New Album THE KING OF ENDICOTT

There must be something in the water of Endicott, NY. Not only is that small city of roughly 12,000 souls the origin of one of the largest, most innovative corporations of all-time, IBM, but it is also the birthplace of some of America's most demented geniuses including the man who transformed TV in the 1960s with his series The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling, as well as the comic sibling pair of Amy & David Sedaris, and finally the most celebrated voice in metal and the artist who gave us the heavy metal horned salute, Ronnie James Dio! But there can be only one King Of Endicott, one artist whose fearless and uncompromising vision allowed him to both transcended that little town of Endicott and yet embody all of its otherworldy qualities. And that man is Gary Wilson!

BWW Review: Ready to Throttle Your Elf on the Shelf? Well, Theatre in the Park's SANTALAND DIARIES May Be Just the Ticket

Four years ago, my husband and I took our kids to New York for Christmas. Like many unsuspecting fools, we just had to see the Macy's Santa. After winding our way through a gumdrop forest for what seemed to be an eternity, we made it to Santa's house, where he chatted with our fed up children for about 30 seconds before shuffling off to housewares. So maybe that's why the Theatre in the Park production of David Sedaris' THE SANTALAND DIARIES tickled my funny bone so.

BWW Review: THE SANTALAND DIARIES Lose Something in Translation at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley

The humor in many Sedaris pieces comes from the obvious anguish of social misfits forced to contort themselves into a publicly presentable form, or, conversely, the observer's schadenfreude in having the misfit revealed for their true, damaged self. Neither of those elements is really present in Santaland, where the stage David-Crumpet presents as a fairly well-adjusted fellow forced to take on a seemingly demeaning survival job.

BWW Review: THE SANTALAND DIARIES at Zach Scott Theatre

I was eager to finally experience The Santaland Diaries this year at Zach Theatre's intimate Whisenhunt Theatre, a perfect venue for this classic one-man show. I had heard David Sedaris deliver the story on NPR and I've read it a time or two over the years, but somehow never caught a production until this past Saturday night.

BWW Review: THE SANTALAND DIARIES at Goodman Theatre

To sum up the Goodman Theatre's pairing of holiday productions this season: it was the best of humanity; it was the worst of humanity. While Tiny Tim's blessings and Scrooge's transformation warm hearts nightly in the Goodman's Albert Theatre, across the lobby in the Owen Theatre is a much different scene: a sardonic sendup of Christmas commercialism as told by Crumpet, an elf in Macy's Santaland. Based on the essay by humorist David Sedaris, which propelled him to fame when he performed it on NPR in 1992, Joe Mantello's one-man stage adaptation of THE SANTALAND DIARIES stars Matt Crowle and is directed by Steve Scott.

VIDEO: Crumpet From VSC's THE SANTALAND DIARIES Visits Coast Live

Based on the memoir of award-winning comedic author David Sedaris, this hilarious one-man-show takes us back to ye olden days when he was one of Santa's Elves at Macy's Department Store. In this one-act play the struggling writer, who chooses the elf name 'Crumpet,' weaves an unbelievable tale of drunken Santas, lascivious actors, and combative parents. Come laugh, drink and be merry with your friends at the Wells Theatre. This late night holiday treat for adults is sure to make your spirits bright!
