Told through a series of vignettes, Crossing Delancey examines Bubbie's belief in the old-world Jewish family custom of all young women needing to find a husband as soon as possible to settle down and raise a family against those of Isabel, a modern 1980s Jewish woman in New York City learning to stand on her own two feet. What Opa Did is masterful and brutally honest storytelling at its best, with each actor dedicated to showing each person as a human being, not just either good or bad, while trying to cope with the reality of their lives in Germany in World War II.
Though the production overall was a bit hit-or-miss for me, I was nonetheless impressed by the design and some stand-out performances, and am genuinely delighted that this show, one of my personal favorites of the Century Cycle, gets to live again on the TAG stage.
AN INSPECTOR CALLS is a bit of a soap opera by way of a particularly existential “Twilight Zone” episode while tackling class, entitlement, and status, making it as relevant as it was 60 years ago.

Priestley’s Hitchcockian suspense drama An Inspector Calls enjoyed a very successful run at Theatre 40 during this past November/December, directed with great skill and innovation by Cate Caplin. As of January 8, the production moves into the stately Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, a perfect location for the play’s action. Here is my interview with Cate about moving the production there.
