The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) stage a brand-new production of The Mikado on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 7:30 pm. The updated production, complete with culturally-sensitive costumes and scenes, honors the delightfully droll libretto and score Gilbert and Sullivan fans have come to love.

Die-hard musical theater enthusiasts and fans of opera will love the Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's strongest scores. With quick-witted and clever lyrics that satirize society, you can easily see the influence G&S's works like The Mikado had on the works of American musical theater composers Rodgers and Hart, Stephen Sondheim, and Harnick and Bock. Since its founding in 1974, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) has presented more than 2,000 performances of the Gilbert & Sullivan masterpieces throughout the United States, Canada and England, captivating audiences of all ages. America's preeminent Gilbert & Sullivan Repertory Ensemble, continues its 45th season with its novel production of The Mikado, one of the most enduring musicals in theatrical history.

Though there's nary a mention of snowfall or jingle bells in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, the abundance of joy and good clean humor, not to mention some terrific voices, in the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players' frothily charming production of G&S's 1879 romantic romp makes it a grand choice for holiday entertainment.

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) continues its 44th season beginning Thursday, December 27 with five performances of The Pirates of Penzance at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (E. 68th Street Between Park and Lexington Avenues).

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players 44th season kicks off with Gilbert & Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard which tells the story of a falsely accused prisoner in the Tower of London, the two girls who loved him, and an out of work itinerant jester in grand and colorful fashion - with humor and a touch of pathos. Performances are on Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (E. 68th Street between Park & Lexington Avenues near Lexington).

Even though Sheldon Harnick was playing the violin in his High School's Gilbert & Sullivan productions… 'I could still hear the lyrics', he wrote in his alumni magazine of Northwestern University. Harnick continued, 'At that time I was turned on by the patter songs, so I began to familiarize myself with Gilbert and Sullivan. I was more fascinated by the virtuosity than anything else. Little by little, I also realized what a fine poet Gilbert was and how imaginative he was, even in the slower songs. So he became an enormous influence.'

'No song unsung, no wine untasted.' That's the philosophy behind Songs at the New World, a monthly open mic night that presents its first Songwriter Spotlight on Friday 4/27/18 at 10:30pm at New World Stages. Described as 'a boozy, belting bash,' the evening is hosted by Colleen Harris and Lindsay Morgan, with music direction by Joshua Stephen Kartes and resident music director Will TN Hall.
