by Laura Jones - Jul 27, 2018

Following on from a hugely successful run at Chichester, Sir Ian McKellen is back in the title role of King Lear, in the same theatre in which he made his West End debut in 1964. The Duke of York's is decidedly bigger than the Minerva, but with the addition of a walkway through the centre of the auditorium reducing the theatre capacity substantially, there's a much more intimate feel. by Marianka Swain - Apr 26, 2018

The original version of Rodney Ackland's provocative work, The Pink Room, had a bruising reception back in 1952, losing thousands for investor Terence Rattigan amidst furious reviews. Since salvaged by the Orange Tree in the Eighties, its rebirth was cemented by a Judi Dench-starring production at the National, where it now returns for an intriguing if not entirely convincing encore. BWW Review: KING LEAR, Chichester Festival TheatreBWW Review: KING LEAR, Chichester Festival Theatre
by Rona Kelly - Oct 2, 2017

'We that are young Shall never see so much, nor live so long...' 2017 has been dubbed a year of Hamlets (too many, even), with Andrew Scott and Tom Hiddleston both taking on the role. If one play has experienced a renaissance, however, it would surely be King Lear. Indeed, it seems the UK stage will 'never see so much' King Lear as it has in the last twelve months (Timothy West, Antony Sher, Glenda Jackson and Kevin McNally all playing the eponymous King/Queen). Jonathan Munby's production at Chichester Festival Theatre is the latest, which sees Ian McKellen revisit the role he played a decade ago at the RSC. (more...)

The Mail describes her approach as playing the Earl as 'an Angela Merkel-esque, straight-talking woman.' (more...)

BWW Review: KING LEAR, Old Vic, 7 November 2016
by Jenny Gilbert - Nov 8, 2016

Gender-blind casting has arrived and we'd better get used to it. Correction: it seems we are getting used to it, viz the imminent revival of the Donmar's all-female Shakespeare trilogy. The headline story of Glenda Jackson's Lear is that this Lear is magnificent, and its magnificence emanates directly from the text. (more...)
