NY Premiere Of STILL AT RISK Begins Performances Tonight At Theater For The New City

Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Executive Artistic Director), in association with MBL Productions (Mary J. Davis, Producer), presents the New York premiere of the new play, Still at Risk by Tim Pinckney (Message to Michael). Performances begin TONIGHT, Thursday, March 7, 2019 for a limited engagement through Sunday, March 31, 2019 in the 88Community Space Theater at Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue, between 9th & 10th Streets). Opening Night is Sunday afternoon, March 10,2019 at 3:00 p.m.

Directed by Carl Andress (The Divine Sister; Die, Mommie, Die!), the five-member cast will feature Robert Gomes (Dada Woof Papa Hot, The Tempermentals) as Kevin, Christopher J. Hanke (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Buyer & Cellar) as Christopher, Amy Hohn (November, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) as Susan, Ryan Spahn (Daniel's Husband, Summer and Smoke) as Byron, and Jonathan Walker (The Assembled Parties, The Divine Sister) as Marcus.

GAY BOY is the provocative account of some sort of gay man living some sort of life as an English Teacher in South Korea. His best friend Stella has been cheating on her girlfriend, behavior Gay Boy detests, but this doesn't prevent him from sleeping with as many men as possible. On the surface, Gay Boy may seem like a 'typical' gay boy: highly sexed, sassy, and reveling in both. But when his vulnerability surfaces after a one-night stand, truths about his past are finally revealed.

Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theater Presents JOHANNES DOKCHTOR FAUST

From March 21 to April 7, Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., will present Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre (CAMT) in an update of its perennially popular 'Johannes Dokchtor Faust, a Petrifying Puppet Comedye,' translated and directed by Vit Horejs. This classic of the Czech marionette repertoire is traditionally used to make fun of a king or a local mayor.  The company's adaptation was initially developed in 1990 and its topical references are being updated to the current topsy-turvy political climate.

PIE LESSONS will be presented as part of TNC's SCRATCH NIGHT performance program, which offers the opportunity for artists to present work in progress to an audience for one night.

Performances begin Thursday, March 7, 2019 for a limited engagement through Sunday, March 31, 2019 in the Community Space Theater at Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue, between 9th & 10th Streets). The cast and creative team will be announced shortly.

'Bring it On' meets 'Dreamgirls' in the girl-group musical, 'Betty and the Belrays' by William Electric Black aka Ian Ellis James, which will be presented by Theater for the New City January 31 to February 17. The piece tells the story of three white female singers from Detroit who struggle to change a racially divided society by singing for a black record label. Book and lyrics are by William Electric Black. Music is by Black, Valerie Ghent (arranger/keyboards for Ashford & Simpson) and Gary Schreiner. Choreography is by Jeremy Lardieri. Director is Mr. Black.

A male plumber and a female woodworker take the the art world by storm in 'Catapult!' by Matthew James Fitzgerald, to be presented by Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave.,  February 21 to March 10.  The piece is a subversive commentary on the pretensions and 'artspeak' of the gallery scene. Fitzgerald is an actor, author, union carpenter, furniture designer and sometime history/english teacher.

Theater for the New City Hosts the NY Premiere Of COLORSTRUCK By Donald E. Lacy, Jr.

From February 28 to March 17, Theater for the New City will present comedian/actor/broadcaster Donald E. Lacy Jr. in the New York debut of his one man show, 'ColorStruck.' The play was born in California's Bay Area and has been presented on college campuses around the country and at the National Black Theatre Festival. It was performed twice for the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus.

There is such an intriguing (and first of its kind that I have seen) backstory as to how four individuals, keen on getting their children out of an unsafe Brooklyn apartment, stage a robbery to expedite the process.
