From August 25 to September 15, 2019, Theater for the New City (TNC), under the direction of Crystal Field, Artistic Director, will present its tenth annual Dream Up Festival, a feast of adventurous theater mixing world premieres and New York premieres. It's an ultimate new work festival dedicated to the joy of discovering new authors and edgy, innovative performances.
Dining with Ploetz, an evening of one-acts, will play at Theater for the New City September 5 - 22. Opening night is slated for Friday, September 6 at 8:00 pm. Written by playwright and published author Richard Ploetz, the production features three dark comedies, Goldfish, Memory Like a Pale Green Clock and Bone Appetite.
Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company will open its 43rd annual tour August 3 with 'No Brainer or the Solution to Parasites,' a rip-roaring musical which portrays our road to national madness as a bad trip to Hades. Free performances will tour parks, playgrounds and closed-off streets throughout the five boroughs through September 15. Written by Solnik, directed by Nikki Reed and presented by Executive Artistic Director Crystal Fields, "Birds of Paradise" is being performed in the East Village for a very limited run. With opening night this past Thursday and running only through July 14th, this show is definitely one I recommend seeing. With a rather clever plot that is as touching as it is on the constant brink of drama, "Birds of Paradise" is now one of my favorite of Solnik's productions.

To celebrate the official kick-off of Summer, Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, EXECUTIVE Artistic Director) will host the 24th Annual LOWER EAST SIDE FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS, a FREE Summer Arts Festivals HOSTED BY Theater for the New City (155 First Ave. at 10th St.). Since classical times, artists have always had to reconcile the demands of their patrons with their own artistic integrity. In the 21st century, the patrons' demands can come from both the left and right. 'Zen A.M.,' a new comedy by Natalie Menna, illustrates the conundrum, nesting it in present-day issues of class identification, compassion, cultural identity and creative resistance. Theater for the New City will present the world premiere of the piece May 31 to June 16, directed by Andrew Block.

Where Do All the Ghosts Go? is a dark comedy about the demolition of a historic NYC building and the ghosts of significant people who have made it their post-life home. The reading follows the 8:00 PM production of 'Johannes Dokchtor Faust, a Petrifying Puppet Comedye' by Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre.

GAY BOY is the provocative account of some sort of gay man living some sort of life as an English Teacher in South Korea. His best friend Stella has been cheating on her girlfriend, behavior Gay Boy detests, but this doesn't prevent him from sleeping with as many men as possible. On the surface, Gay Boy may seem like a 'typical' gay boy: highly sexed, sassy, and reveling in both. But when his vulnerability surfaces after a one-night stand, truths about his past are finally revealed.
From March 21 to April 7, Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., will present Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre (CAMT) in an update of its perennially popular 'Johannes Dokchtor Faust, a Petrifying Puppet Comedye,' translated and directed by Vit Horejs. This classic of the Czech marionette repertoire is traditionally used to make fun of a king or a local mayor. The company's adaptation was initially developed in 1990 and its topical references are being updated to the current topsy-turvy political climate.

'Bring it On' meets 'Dreamgirls' in the girl-group musical, 'Betty and the Belrays' by William Electric Black aka Ian Ellis James, which will be presented by Theater for the New City January 31 to February 17. The piece tells the story of three white female singers from Detroit who struggle to change a racially divided society by singing for a black record label. Book and lyrics are by William Electric Black. Music is by Black, Valerie Ghent (arranger/keyboards for Ashford & Simpson) and Gary Schreiner. Choreography is by Jeremy Lardieri. Director is Mr. Black.
