The State of Broadway: January 2021

It's no secret that the state of the world has had a major impact on the theatre industry over the past year. Broadway, which usually brings in $14 billion to New York City's yearly revenue, has been shuttered since last March, leaving the futures of many artists and shows in limbo. While many of those productions move forward with plans to reopen when Broadway officially returns, some have already announced that they will not open again.

Play On Shakespeare Commissions UNIVERSES To Take On HAMLET

Play On Shakespeare, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to exploring the world of Shakespeare through translation and adaptation, today announces a commission with UNIVERSES to take on Hamlet. Amrita Ramanan, OSF's Literary Director, will serve as dramaturg.

Roundabout Announces Plans for 2021-22 Season; CAROLINE, OR CHANGE and TROUBLE IN THE MIND Coming Next Fall

Roundabout Theatre Company has just announced plans to resume production in Fall 2021. On deck is Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s CAROLINE, OR CHANGE starring Sharon D Clarke, directed by Michael Longhurst, and choreographed by Ann Yee at Studio 54. Additionally, Alice Childress’s TROUBLE IN MIND, directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, will debut at the American Airlines Theatre.

The Dramatists Guild of America is presenting the 2nd season of their podcast, Dramatists Guild Presents: TALKBACK, now available on all your favorite podcast platforms. Season 2 explores the idea of access. In the 1st episode, TALKBACK host Christine Toy Johnson is joined by Georgia Stitt & Lloyd Suh to discuss the theatre industry’s “pipeline”.  

Door Shakespeare Opens THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Door Shakespeare has announced their second virtual production: The Comedy of Errors, by William Shakespeare. The Comedy of Errors streams to homes from Tuesday, October 27 through Monday, November 16.

MAURICE HINES: BRING THEM BACK Wins Best Documentary At The 2020 American Black Film Festival

The 2020 American Black Film Festival announced its winners during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, August 30 from Miami Beach, Fla. Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker hosted the awards show, which featured Spike Lee, Lee Daniels, Laz Alonso, Bevy Smith, Logan Browning, Sinqua Walls and La La Anthony as presenters with BeBe Winans closing the ceremony with a performance of his original song “Black Lives Matter.”

OWN Announces Straight-to-Series Order for DELILAH

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today a straight-to-series order for the new original drama series “Delilah,” from acclaimed “Greenleaf” creator Craig Wright, who will serve as executive producer along with Charles Randolph-Wright and Oprah Winfrey.

Broadway Rewind: MOTOWN Raises the Volume at Bryant Park in 2013

Today we flashback to 2013, when Motown first performed on the Bryant Park stage. Motown opened on April 14, 2013 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it played for 738 performances, and returned to Broadway in 2016. Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and choreographed by Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams, it starred Brandon Victor Dixon, Valisia Lekae, Bryan Terrell Clark, Charl Brown, and more.
