The Suzi Bass Awards, Inc. announced winners for the 2013-2014 Atlanta professional theatrical season this evening at the awards ceremony at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center. The evening was hosted by Rob Cleveland. Presenters included Deadre Moore, Ingrid Cole and Christy Baggett, Eric and Bethany Mendenhall, Veronika Duerr and Laura Cole, Clifton Guterman and WABE's John Lemley, Tess and Mark Kincaid, and Karen Howell and Chris Ekholm. Cygnet Theatre Season 12 got off to a rollicking start with the return of audience favorite and off-Broadway hit, Pageant, just in time for summer fun. James Vasquez directed and choreographed this hilarious mash-up of a beauty pageant and a drag musical that let's audience members decide who is crowned the winner. The talented and funny David McBean returned as Miss Deep South and Phil Johnson reprised his role as the wacky master of ceremonies. With Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell (Side Show) and Frank Kelly (The Texas Chainsaw Musical) and Music by Albert Evans, this crowd pleasing romp about beauty contestants ran over the summer. The York Theatre Company, and its acclaimed Developmental Reading Series, present the New York premiere of three new musicals: Mark Felt, Superstar with book, music and lyrics by Joshua Rosenblum; Paris Through the Window, with book & lyrics by Charles Osborne and music by Leo Hurley; and We Foxes with book, lyrics and music by Ryan Scott Oliver at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (Entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). The readings are open to the public with a suggested donation of $5.00.

PAGEANT is back at the Cygnet Theatre and James Vasquez is happy to be the man that directs this new production. I was able to chat with him between rehearsals to chat about bringing the Glamouresse pageant back to the stage. PAGEANT is playing at the Cygnet Theatre through Sunday, August 31.
