A surprisingly enjoyable jukebox musical featuring phenomenally-performed song-and-dance spectaculars (but with an awkwardly delivered story structure), this touring version of the 2019 Broadway musical about the founding of Motown's R&B supergroup The Temptations is a fun evening at the theater, especially for those looking for a nostalgic trip.

What did our critic think of AIN'T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS at Proctors Theatre?

Ain’t Too Proud is a 2018 Jukebox Musical with original music and lyrics by the Temptations and a book written by Dominique Morisseau. It opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in March of 2019.

Summer is coming to West Palm Beach at last with SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical making its premiere engagement at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts May 20-26.

And while that is one of the true musical highlights of Summer – The Donna Summer Musical, it also focuses attention on the fact that the musical itself – or, rather, its problematic book – often seems unable to figure out how to focus the spotlight on its heroine. Taking a non-linear pathway through the story of the diva’s life, Summer – The Donna Summer Musical is oftentimes confusing and sometimes perplexing, despite the fact that the musical score (attributed to Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Paul Jabara and “others” in the playbill) is wonderfully entertaining and certain to unleash a flood of memories for audience members of a certain vintage.

Looking for some 'hot stuff'? From now until March 20th, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is playing at Detroit's Fisher Theatre. Summer played on Broadway throughout 2018 and later toured North America in 2019.

Summer is coming to Baltimore this winter with SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical, making its premiere engagement at the historic Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center February 15-20, 2022 for eight performances. Over the past several years, one thing is for certain Broadway audiences and Regional audiences alike come out in droves to witness, experience, dance, and sing along with well known songs that have defined music across many generations. With shows like Ain’t too Proud: Life and Times of the Temptations, and MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical, Broadway is no stranger to this type of tale. Tuesday night was no exception as the doors of Morsani Hall at the Straz Center burst at the seams with only the glitz and glamour that the Queen of Disco could bring to the party. Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is a jam-packed 115 minute spectacle of grandeur. The talent here is absolutely no joke and is full of all the Donna Summer songs we have come to know and love.

​​​​​​​ The Ordway is heating up the winter with 'Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,' on stage Dec. 28 - Jan. 2 at the downtown Saint Paul venue. The new touring production tells the astonishing story of singer, songwriter and 'Queen of Disco' Donna Summer. This will be the musical's Minnesota premiere.

The three actresses that share the role of musical icon Donna Summer are Brittny Smith as “Diva Donna,” Charis Gullage as “Disco Donna” and Amahri Edwards-Jones as “Duckling Donna.”

The non-Equity North American Tour of SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical returned to the road with official tour opening in Pittsburgh, PA at the Benedum Center (November 16-21, 2021). The tour will then visit more than 40 cities for the 2021-22 touring season.

While I have my music-nerd quibbles, this is pretty damn good for a non-union touring production.
