Production Begins on ENOLA HOLMES Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill
by Kaitlin Milligan - Jul 22, 2019

Emmy nominee and BAFTA award winning director Harry Bradbeer (“Fleabag,” “Killing Eve”) has begun production on location in London for the mystery adventure “Enola Holmes,” from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The starring cast is led by Millie Bobby Brown (“Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Stranger Things”) in the title role of Sherlock Holmes's much younger—and equally intelligent—sister, Enola. Joining Brown is Henry Cavill (“Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” “Man of Steel,” “The Witcher”) as Sherlock Holmes and Sam Claflin as the eldest of the Holmes siblings, Mycroft Holmes (“The Hunger Games” films, “Me Before You”), as well as two-time Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King's Speech,” “The Wings of the Dove,” the “Harry Potter” films) as the Holmes clan's enigmatic mother, Eudoria. Written by acclaimed screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne (“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “Wonder”), the film's script is based on the popular Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer, revealing a dynamic untold chapter in the life of the world's greatest detective and his brilliant family.

BWW Review: The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts Summer Camp Presents Stephen Sondheim's Hilarious A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM at Ruth Eckerd Hall
by Peter Nason - Jul 19, 2019

When it comes to Tony Award snubbing, there are several artistic high crimes and misdemeanors. For instance, Fiorello! winning Best Musical over Gypsy, or the good Music Man besting the better West Side Story. Or how about this awful upset: Two Gentlemen of Verona (the since-forgotten musical) beating both Grease and Follies for the top honor. Perhaps worst of all is this: Even though A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM was Stephen Sondheim's first and most successful Broadway show as a composer and lyricist, and even though it would win six of its eight nominated Tony Awards in 1962-1963 (including Best Musical), Mr. Sondheim himself was not even nominated for his lyrics and score. A show that features some of the most beloved comic songs from the early 1960's--'Comedy Tonight,' 'Lovely,' and 'Everybody Ought to Have a Maid'--wasn't even nominated for these iconic numbers. (For the record, Oliver! won that year for Best Score.) Broadway's greatest composer would have to wait almost a decade to receive his first Tony Award.

Newport Jazz Festival Explores Relationship Between Jazz & Hip-Hop
by A.A. Cristi - Jul 3, 2019

There is a definite relationship between rap and jazz. Musicians improvise with notes. Rappers improvise with words. Many of the great hip-hop recordings featured samples from some of the greatest jazz albums. So it should be no surprise that there are rappers who are not only comfortable in post-bop sonic settings, but can also deliver some swinging verses themselves. The result of this fusion of styles, motifs, and genres is a corps of instrumentalists who are influenced by rappers, who in turn, are influenced by musicians.
